I think I missed the point on this one
on 11 April 2012
First off, I love Calvino. If on a winters night ... is a masterpiece!
Unfortunately, I just couldn't see the point in this one, which is not to say I got nothing out of it. There are some wonderful descriptions, and some of the cities provided me with inspiration for my own stories - but I don't think that was the point. Or maybe it was?
I don't need a linear plot, or even a rational plot - I enjoy Paul Auster and think House Of Leaves is another masterpiece that everybody should read (if you don't mind creepy dreams for weeks on end!), but this book just left me cold.
Sorry - I understand a lot of people rank it as one of the best books ever written, but I think this is one that's always going to polarise people, and for me it just didn't work.
Maybe I'll give it 5 years and try it again - see if that makes any difference to my opinion...
