Listen to baby (except when you don't but do)..!?!
on 2 April 2016
There are serious contradictions to her own methods/advice in this book!
For instance she starts the book describing the importance of listening to your baby. She then gives an example of a 3week old who wouldn't sleep if put down. She details how over 3 days she pick up/ put down shhhh X number of times and baby settled. I started to try this with my 5 week old but she was increasingly hysterical and over tired after the first hour of trying this method. In that respect and in tears myself, I felt it is no better than controlled crying I picked her up and nursed her to sleep, which is what she was 'telling' me she wanted all along. Then later in the book she herself says that this method should not be used for any child under 3 months. How would I know that as a first time mum if she starts the book saying it's ok??
After reading a few of these baby books and feeling like a terrible mother afterwards, I am of the opinion now that instinctive parenting is the better method for me - even the 'experts' can't decide within their own book.
It's in the recycling bin!
