TOP 500 REVIEWERon 17 February 2015
As a companion volume to the author's massive HITLER. this is a great success. It is a photographic record with supporting text and captions of the rise and fall Hitler and of the state that the leader of the NSDAP constructed. The pictures, nearly 500 of them, are culled from press reports of the era together with many others from various sources, public and otherwise. The reproduction is not always as good as it might be, often grey and grainy. In part this is due to the nature of the sources, scans of long forgotten newspapers together with crinkly and dog eared prints lifted from private albums. Few, I suspect, come from original negatives. This is made worse by the paper used for the book which is not of the best quality. Had a glossy and heavier rag paper been used the whole book would have had a more upmarket feel to it.

The pictures are all identified and put into context by the informative and well written text and the volume is well bound and has an attractive if now rather dated dust jacket. The book does stand well enough on it's own but when studied in parallel with Toland's masterly biography, superior in many ways to the later and more PC Hitler, the book finds its true worth.

A recommended buy.

This book was meant as a supplement to John Toland's biography of Hitler. It contains 465 photographs, 11 of them in full color. It is hard to describe the pictures to you. Some are candid shots and others are exquisitely staged. They pretty much line up in chronological order and they also show the people that were on Hitler's periphery. Photograph 155 is the next day Hindenburg died. Photograph 176 shows Bormann at the wheel with a Frau Hess. Photograph 228 a member of Sir Oswald Mosley's black shirt is with the brown shirts.

We could go on forever however let me say the photographs cover the time from 1899 through 1944. Many of these pictures are not seen in newsreels.

Superb as usual from John Toland. I was surprised when I found out about this book was originally supposed to accompany the mighty tome 'HITLER'. As soon as I found that out, this copy was winging it's way to me. A very good collection of decent photographs indeed. If this sort of thing floats your boat, then you cannot really do much better anywhere.....

I have many books in my library on The Third Reich and HITLER in particular and many, as you would expect, duplicate photos. This book has some I already have yet a great many I don't and therefore I am pleased to recommend it to any students of the times.
