This is the fourth edition of Ashby's introductory Engineering Materials book.
Unlike most engineering books, 'Ashby' volumes 1 and 2 work standalone - you don't need a lecturer!
Not only are these by far the best general materials books around, they also lead you through how Engineering is actually (or at least how it should be!) done.

This book is more suitable as a reference for a practicing engineer, rather than a textbook for an undergraduate student - it contains all the necessary information, and the most important thing - excellent worked examples; but it is lacking on explanations and worked examples on basic things.
To um up, I definitely recommend this book for all practicing engineers, as it contains valuable information and case studies.
