Although this is not the limited edition I had hoped for I can seriously recommend this title to any existing Springsteen fan, and note I said existing. If you are looking for a biography then there are better books on the market. However, this is literally a snapshot of a certain creative period in Springsteens career. All the photos were taken around the time of Darkness on the Edge of Town and capture the feeling and isolation of that album and it's subsequent partner The Promise. The pictures are all in black and white and are better for that. Meola is a skilled photographer and a friend of the subject. He has a rich understanding of the landscape and many photos are evocative of the songs on the album. This is enhanced by the inclusion of either part or full lyrics from many of them . This is in some ways a photographic memoir of a road trip taken through Springsteens songs and an american landscape which probably no longer exists. As a partner to the recent Darkness box set and The Promise DVD it is excellent but it works equally as well as a testiment to the skills of Meola, thoroughly recommended.
I have been really pleasantly impressed by the releases of the Eric Meola books coming on to the market. The Born to Run photos are absolutely brilliant, these photographs themselves are on par, although the quality of the book and the quality of the prints are unfortunately not on par. But don't get me wrong, this book is great, it really is, so if your a Bruce fan you need it! The photographs are good quality and printed on nice paper, just don't expect your getting the same size and quality as the Born to Run book!
