Required reading for anyone interested in issues pertaining to mental health and psychiatry. Szasz outlines the manifold ways in which the psychiatric establishment fails to justify its own framework, one problem I had however was that Szasz fails consistently to outline an alternative.

He deftly deconstructs the medicalisation of behaviour and offers brilliant insight into the nature of mental problems, but I am left thinking: well, what now?

I first read this book over 20 years ago for a course module. Since then misplaced the book and wanted to re-read so bought it again. It's a good read offering a different perspective on mental illness from a professional.

If your interested in mental health and the issues involved (politicaly minded also) then this is the read for you. The perspective offered by Szasz is very informative.

Very, very well written by professional 'insiders'. Their passion and moral outrage on behalf of patients who have been duped and damaged by "psycho-business" shines through. Looking forward to the next book!

This is a deeply important analysis of what is happening in the fields of psychiatry and psychotherapy. It is slightly dated now, but still packs a punch; many of the concerns identified are as relevant now as when it was written.

Thomas Szasz writes logically and succinctly about the fact that so called "mental illness" does not exist. In this day and age with big Pharma attempting to drug everyone on the planet and convince us we're all in need of medication it's hard to imagine that it is a big fraud. But it is. Read and learn how it all started. Then read his later books such as Psychiatry- The Science of Lies. Get enlightened and fight back- while you still can.
