This really is a fabulous book. It is not self help as such, but is more focused upon female survivors who are brave and wonderful in coming forward and sharing their trauma through such a creative and beautiful manner. Some of the stories in here are so sad and desperate, but for me that only helped to make me stronger. I look up to these women who were so courageous in coming forward and breaking all the taboos society sadly bestows upon us.
I think it is a read for anyone. I think if you read this book, you will then truly understand the hardships of being a victim of sexual abuse. It features famous stories such as why the caged bird sings, and also some famous writings by Billie Haliday. But more importantly, it contains writings from women who just survived, women who you probably wouldn't look twice at in the street. Women like you and me. True survivors at all extremes.

The fact that this book told the stories of every-day women, women like your mother, your neighbour, your best-friend, yourself... made it very approachable. Furthermore, the layout, being as it was, divided into sections according to abuser-type, made it easy to navigate. The vast range of experiences described in this book allows any kind of survivor, be they the victim of multiple abuses, or one single seemingly unimportant event, to relate to the book and see themselves as one of a number, instead of a sole individual alone in their world of issolation. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered ANY kind of sexual abuse to ANY degree!

This is a book for those who have a deep awareness of the pain of sexual abuse as well as a strong belief in the value of creative therapies, including writing. Each woman's story is painfully honest and amazingly brave. This is a particularly good book for counselors to have on hand.

Absolute waste of money. The first quarter of the book is about sexual abuse in general, but written awfully by the author. And the author never said this, but it's blatantly clear she is a Feminist hating on ALL men.

She talked about sexual abuse in the media, and claimed that an advert selling a mattress was sending out the message that children are available for sexual pleasure, because the advert showed a girl curled up on a mattress, with text saying "Try something new". There is absolutely nothing inappropriate about that, and these women must have a disturbed mind to think that is sexual abuse of a child.

The author also said at one point that "we were all sexually abused", and she claims this because apparently all men treat women this way. Basically she is painting all men to be sexual predators, who use females for sex. I have never read so much rubbish in my life.

As for the stories, a good half are poems, NOT stories. Some of the stories aren't even stories, just survivors talking about the issue in general. This book is just a way to try and brainwash women that all men disrespect women, and want them for sex. Disgusting.

I found this book very comforting, in that it helped me realise I am not alone in dealing with this stuff. This book shows that there are varying degrees of abuse, and what may be classed as 'minor' can still have a major impact on the victim.

Well written, very moving. Worth buying!
