Having served in the military for over 30 years I'm always very sceptical about military thrillers however Once a Pilgrim is excellent. The characters are very believable and the descriptions of situations and locations are spot on, as is the language used. The author has found the perfect medium between avoiding used TLA (three letter abbreviations) and jargon, which many civilians wouldn't understand and dampening it down too much and thus deterring the readers with military experience.
It's also nice to find a new author who has actually had the book proof read before publishing rather than relying on the first readers and then updating as they go along.
I have no doubt that many of the events mentioned in the book are actually anecdotes from the author's own service and I look forward immensely to reading the further adventures of John Carr. I'm pretty sure the author's autobiography would also be an excellent read!
