A very short ( compared to the usual fire and ice series) book. It was very pleasant of a girl and her new ice dragon friend, but what I loved the most was the art. The cover and the chapter illustrations.

And all of us who approach this book after reading A song of Ice and Fire should have in mind that it has nothing to do with such a series. Other than dragons, of course.
This is a short story written obviously for children or young teenagers, easy to read, quite simple and with a little touch of magic. A fairy tale about a little girl and an ice dragon.
Not an awesome book, but still quite nice to read.

If you want any young person to get into fantasy, go ahead and buy this book for him/her.

Synopsis:

Set long before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, The Ice Dragon follows the story of Adara, a young girl who is different to everyone else in her family. Born in the middle of winter, Adara is a winter child that does not fear the dragons that fly over her farm. Then one day Adara finds an ice dragon, and each winter they take to the skies. But Westeros is at war, and it is only a matter of time before fire breathing dragons appear in her village, bent on destroying everything in their path.

Review:

Having been a fan of George R. R. Martin’s work for a number of years, I went into reading this with some very high expectations, and it did not disappoint. The Ice Dragon is a beautiful children’s story that is thoughtful, provoking and wonderfully written,

The plot is a fairly simple one, but it’s fantastically executed and filled with lots of subtle elements from the series that so many adore. Adara is great, she’s fearless, staying out longer than any of the other children during the winter months, playing with lizards and approaching the ice dragon all alone. She stands out, sets herself apart from the other children and her brothers and sisters, and while she seems misunderstood by her family, she really is a fantastic character that you instantly empathize with.

This has probably been said in many reviews of The Ice Dragon, but the illustrations are astounding, I found myself getting distracted from the story many times in order to inspect them. They make the whole book feel cold and icy, it really adds to the whole atmosphere of the book.

It’s a sweet enjoyable story about a little girl that sacrifices her desires in order to save her family. It’s intelligent, thought provoking and lavishly illustrated. It may not be entirely for children, - there are some gory head-splitting scenes - but all in all a wonderful little book. I for one hope Martin delves into children’s writing again, if The Ice Dragon is anything to go by, it’s sure to be a wonderful book!

I nice child friendly story, with great illustrations. I am a not the target audience for this book, but it a great book to introduce young readers to the word of fantasy and dragons without the gore factor.

Adara is not like other children, born on the coldest day of the coldest winter she is known as the winter child. Not just because of her birthday date but her cold emotional state that even segregates her from her own family. She has one friend the Legondary Ice Dragon, the most untameable of all dragon types. a tale of friendship and sacrifice. If I read this when I was 9 or 10 I would have given it 5 stars and become an instant fan.

For readers familiar with the wonder that is George R R Martin (which is approximately two thirds of the world’s population), it should come as no surprise that this book is an utter delight. Adara is a child born in the dead of winter, and according to some, she has ice in her veins instead of blood. Her own father calls her personality “cold”, as she has, or displays, no true warmth to another human being.

And this is true, up to a point. Sweet, young, naive, but beautiful Adara knows love. It comes in the form of an ice dragon, which she first befriends on her fourth birthday. Since then, the two souls (one human, the other a dragon) have been inseparable. The problem is, the rest of Adara’s family hates and fears the Ice Dragon. Adara’s uncle, Hall wants the family to move away from the farm, as he knows a vicious war is coming. Adara’s father is a lover of tradition, so he has no intention of giving away everything his heart and soul holds dear. And of course Adara’s does not want to move, either, for fear of losing touch with her soul mate.

The book is a treat to read. Some sections of text approach the quality of a timeless fairy tale. For example, taken from page 31 of the hardcover release:

’When the ice dragon beat its wings, the cold winds blew and the snow swirled and scurried and the world seemed to shrink and shiver. Sometimes when a door flew open in the cold of winter, driven by a sudden gust of wind, the householder would run to bolt it and say, “An ice dragon flies nearby.”’

And speaking of the book itself; it too is a joy to behold. The illustrated hard cover version comes with a slightly padded cover and the sketches are some of the most stunning you will see anywhere. The image taken from the cover alone is worth the cost of admission and throughout the book are imaginings that span full two pages and which are truly breathtaking.

Back to the story: the world can not remain a fairy tale for ever. There is an ongoing war in the book’s universe, and this time it features dragons as the weapons of choice instead of nuclear powered missiles, or hand guns, or even (dare I say it) religion.

So we can safely assume that young Adara’s friend has a role to play in the upcoming events. I recommend those interested in finding out precisely what, pick up this wonderfully crafted novella from the genre’s grand master to see how it all turns out.

Hugely recommended from me.

BFN Greggorio!
