Good beginners' dictionary with two small flaws
on 18 February 2015
In general this is a good dictionary for beginners, which I have found useful in my first four months of studying German. It is a convenient portable size. The pages are clearly laid out, essential vocabulary is highlighted, and many helpful examples are given of how to use the words. There is very little about grammar, but all verbs are linked to a verb table which shows how they are conjugated, and eleven important verbs are conjugated in full. In addition, the main text shows the present, imperfect and perfect tense of all verbs where these are irregular. The plurals of nouns are shown in full, which makes them easier to memorise.
I have two small complaints. Firstly, separable verbs are not indicated as such (in other dictionaries this is usually done by inserting a horizontal line, e.g. "nach|sehen"). In this dictionary you have to spot that the past participle (which is always shown for separable verbs) begins with the separable prefix before the "ge", e.g. "nachgesehen". Or sometimes an example is shown with the separable prefix at the end of the phrase. Secondly, although plurals of nouns are usually shown they are sometimes omitted, and you cannot assume from the absence of a plural form that it is the same as the singular.
Apart from those two small flaws I am pleased with this dictionary.
