TOP 1000 REVIEWERon 26 September 2016
This book collects 3 novellas which are set in Westeros around 100 years before the events set down in Game Of Thrones. They were previously published separately & apart from graphic novel versions, have been out of print for many years.

As we all know, Westeros is crammed with amoral characters who blithely pursue their own self-interests. So it was refreshing to read about a naïve, well-meaning duo who - judging by the History Of The Seven Kingdoms companion volume - nevertheless come to have a significant impact on the fate of Westeros. However it’s a stretch to credit them with such significance when you first meet them. ‘Dunk the lunk’ is as straightforward as his name implies & his humbly-named squire ‘Egg’ is just a simple tavern boy - supposedly. An impoverished yet idealistic knight-for-hire with no land of his own, Dunk wanders from job to job like a medieval Incredible Hulk, or Littlest Hobo. When he tries to make a name for himself at a tournament, he unwittingly becomes a pawn in the political arena as well – a form of combat which he is far too naïve to handle.

The tournament is the first of the three stories collected here. All of them are very entertaining & much lighter that the monolithic Song Of Ice & Fire series, although still with cunning plots aplenty. Overall it was fun to see Westeros from a different perspective & I look forward to future Dunk & Egg stories, which the promises in the afterword. I just hope he finishes The Winds Of Winter first!

No where close to his writing of ' A Game of Thrones", I thought some one else had written it, or else it was churned out quickly to profit from the GoT popularity. It wasn't a necessary book, wish he had spent his time adding more to the GoT storyline.

All round good yarn. Interesting to see the Game world before the main story and fun characters to get involved with. I have also read the graphic novels of the first two story's, excellent work.

I was very disappointed. The book was boring and I felt that it had been written for children. Nothing like the Game of Thrones series.

This will have to fill the gap until the last 2 GoT books are finished.
