Sandman Slim is not a terrible book. Its competently written, contains plenty of action, has nicely sardonic-anti hero (albeit one who's hard to warm-to and little too capable) and the fantastical elements fit in nicely with the contemporary real-world setting.

However, and its a big however for me, Sandman Slim is essentially yet another hard-edged fantasy noir and whilst competently executed it adds nothing new or exciting to what is an increasingly overcrowded genre. Its easily digestable pulp-fiction, but it doesn't stand out from the myriad of similar novels or do enough that's fresh and unexpected to demand that you pick up the next in the series.

If this is the first novel of this type that you've tried then maybe you'd come to a different conclusion. Personally, having already tackled all of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and a number of other variations of hard-boiled-noir meets urban fantasy, Sandman Slim didn't offer much in the way of novelty and what it did offer I had encountered before and done better elsewhere.

So not a bad book and if you're looking for a new contemporary fantasy series to get your teeth into probably not a bad place to start. For me though, one trip round the block with Sandman Slim has been more than enough.

Brand new, at least to me. And bloody brilliant. Hardboiled, fast paced, funny, a whole new take a the urban fantasy that will have you fanning yourself as you will be turning the pages that fast!!

A truly gripping read, I could not put it down, Tarantino dialog with evil dead overture, excellently researched I can't wait to start Kill the Dead.

excellent start to a great series. The sense of humour within the storyline had me laughing aloud on several occasions. Can't wait to get further into the world of sandman slim.

Original story line hooks you in from the start and kept me turning the pages. Its sort of fantasy/horror, and not my usual type of book but I really enjoyed it. Not excessively gory. Good holiday read.

This is a fun read, it kept me entertained and meant I'd finished reading it the day I started it. It is a high octane Dresden files esque that will stave off the boredom
