This is a great book for a very high level overview... but it lacks the detail on individual sites / areas to be a really useful guide. It's a good starting point to help you pinpoint areas for holidays or trips, but you'll need to head elsewhere to fill in the detail.

Generally good... but perhaps a little ambitious in its scope to deliver on its promise.

if you want to know where to go and what you will see at practically any wildlife site in the British Isles then this is the book you will need. A good update to the same author's earlier 500 sites version

To put it simply, Christopher Somerville is the world's foremost authority on walking in England & Ireland. And he's got form in Crete (The Golden Step, Haus, 2007). Poet, nature writer, musician, Christopher Somerville is the author of over 30 books, including the Coast books from the BBC series. This latest portable tome is a proper walking stick and tells you where to find everything - from butterflies to eagles - lichen, fungi and mosses - all the mammals and most of the flowers. It is encyclopaedic and infused with the warmth and humour of real knowledge. Where To See Wildlife in England & Ireland is a massive undertaking. It tells you when and where to go to the forests, wetlands, downs and islands; it's got secrets. And because of the excellent maps it can be used as a road guide, with or without your GPS and OS maps. Some of the places are very remote locations & some are frankly just a short walk from wherever you are, if you're lucky to live in this archipelago. A major book bound to be the bible on British and Irish wildlife walks for years to come.
