This book although OK, was a bit of a disappointment for a Collins Manual The Presentation was as you would expect The manual was much too sparse to be a complete book of anything. A good up- to- date DIY manual would have all the information that was in the Collins plumbing book and a lot more besides
If you do not already own Colins Complete DIY Manual then I can see this book being useful. I'm disappointed, the book is advertised as "An extension of the international bestselling Collins Complete DIY Manual" in fact, from what I can tell it is a direct copy of the plumbing chapters from the Complete DIY Manual. There may be the addition of a couple of notes or comments, but the bulk of the information is not new.
If you already have the Complete DIY manual, don't bother with this one too.
I bought this after buying the Collins complete DIY book as I assumed this would give more in depth information on this more specific subject. Actually it's just a direct extract from the DIY book, and prehaps doesn't go into enough detail to justify it's own independant book. Spend a bit more, get the Complete DIY book, which is fantastic and learn about some other subjects at the same time.
I bought this expecting an in depth guide to self-plumbing after previously buying the Collins Complete DIY Manual. It's well written and presents the information clearly with diagrams, but unfortunately it's just a reprint of the plumbing chapters from the more comprehensive book. Save yourself the time/money and just buy the complete DIY book (at the time of writing it's only £5 more). Collins Complete DIY Manual
The tap wouldn't - diss-assemble so I I had to saw the tap off the sink. So then I had to fit two new taps and since I had problems gettint the spanner to get at the taps to remove them - when I did finally remove them I also made sure to refit flexible tapwater pipes. Also one of the stoptaps under the sink was leaking so ....etc etc. In doing this I also kicked the toilet and had to refix it onto the floor. If it happens again it will be a doddle to do it.
But we did this ourself my wife and I - and all it cost apart from busted knuckles and a bad back for a fortnight was the price of the parts and we are chuffed with ourselves I have saved a lot of money and the job looks really good - better than before.. This book is the business what more can I say
Great book, I am currently in the second year of my plumbing course and as the text books we are given are not that informative I purchased this one to gain a better understanding of hot water systems etc, this book explained to me with ease what the tutor has been trying to drum into me for weeks!!!
Lots of this is very similar to the Collins complete DIY book, which I also bought. It's laid out in an easily understandable way, and is an useful guide to simpler jobs. As others have said, it isn't really a complete guide to plumbing and heating. I would have liked more information regarding design and installation of a system.
