This is an excellent series for leisure reading, particularly for adventure/action hungry boys. There are key female characters who also get plenty of action so provides good characters for action hungry girls too. I bought it for my 11 year old and would have been fine for him but the eight year old picked it up first. He is hooked. It was a bit of a stretch in terms of vocabulary and content at first but I let him continue. There are bombs, gun fire and an evil dictatorship in Britain. The main protagonist, Jimmy Coates, discovers in the first book of the series ("Killer") that he is genetically modified, purpose bred for the state to be an assassin. He embarks first on a quest to find out the truth, discovering the extent of his parents' involvement and hooking up with a rebel outfit along the way. He resists his engineered DNA and kills no one but utilises his special powers to fight the state. It is fast paced and might be too old for some eight year olds irrespective of reading ability. However, I am reasonably strict about content, TV etc and listened to the whole book without being concerned albeit I was conscious it was a step-up. This would suit 8 - 12 year olds. I think it would be excellent to draw in those older readers who are reluctant to read.
I actually think this would be suitable for anyone 13 upwards. It's a similar idea to Cherub Series with children being used in Secret Government Forces. As an adult, I also enjoyed it as the action was good and the plot twisted and turned. It is a bit hard to get into as the scene has to be set in the first chapter but it soon gets easier. In fact I couldn't put it down 👍
