Heard this serialised on Radio 4's "Book at Bedtime" and it made for captivating listening. It's not as well known as some of Hilary Mantel's work but her ability to weave a subtly escalating horror story (and not a vampire in sight!!) makes this a really good read. Bought it for a friend for Christmas who was equally impressed.

Started brilliantly but as the story progressed it took on a chilling air. It was very memorable and actually haunted me for some time. Good read though!

I thought this early work by Hilary Mantel did an excellent job of evoking the claustrophobic conditions for western women living in Saudi Arabia in the 80s. I wonder how much things have changed in the intervening period. I good, suspenseful, thriller and beautifully written.

Well it's by Hilary Mantel, what else would you expect! I particularly love the way she conjures up what it's like to be a Western woman in the Middle East, and the aura of dark mystery that she is so good at.

Fabulous book - beautifully written, sometimes agonisingly so. Humour, loneliness, flawed humans and spirits , tragedy, violence and above all, the ability of human nature to deal, if not always completely successfully, with everything thrown at it.

Well written and a good story. Mantel captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of life for women in Jeddah in the 1980s, with all the restrictions that are imposed by the religious and political regime.

A believable account of ex-pat life in Saudi, well written as one would expect from this author

A real insight into womanhood in an Arab country. Enjoyed the style of writing which evokes creeping suspense.
