Poirot's swan song but definitely a book out of time
on 16 September 2017
It appears that Poirot who according to previous books was alive and well in the 1960's has gone back in time to die in the 1940's. I have always wondered why Christie wrote this novel in 1940 but never returned to rewrite an obviously dated story. In the novel Poirot and Hastings are back at Styles the house where they first joined forces to solve a murder. Styles has become a hotel run by a couple back from India.Poirot informs Hastings that among the guests there hides a mass murderer who will kill again. The guests include Hastings own daughter, a randy ex army captain , a doctor snd his hypochondriac wife ,a bird watcher , a woman who's sister was hanged for murder, a nurse and a local bigwig .Poirot tells Hastings that this will be his last case, he is suffering from an incurable heart condition and needs a wheelchair to move around. And so the stage is set but unfortunately this is far from being the book to say farewell to Poirot.
