Britain's 'Foreign & Commonwealth Office' (FCO) occupies a grand Victorian building in Whitehall designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and (for the India office portion) Matthew Digby Wyatt. Threatened with demolition in the 1960s, the building has been restored to its full glory while providing extensive modern office accommodation as well, and Seldon's book is a celebration of this, giving us a view behind the scenes of both the building and some of its occupants. He also conveys with ease the changing role of the institutions which now make up the FCO.
