A book of thoughts, perhaps. More a bible of moment's. From dark places these sordid, almost defening memories choke the very smoke from life's incinerator. The moments which called for tenderness which were far from tender. The laughter as you trip on another metaphoric step down to reality. This collection of failed philosophys is the heady buzz as you fall from the pedestel upon which you placed your childhood. An observer he is not. Brian patten is the absorber of realism, the future of your past. Listen carefully and you'll hear innocence giggling drunkenly from behind the closed doors of adulesence. Look closely and you'll find the lost spark of your own timid imagination. The sweet nothings whispered on the edge of sleep are found here between the lines. As far fetched secrets these words rench an understanding from all that flounder at the abyss's edge. A tettering giddiness encompasses the work and lights the way for guilty shadows. But please don't get to attached to the friendly banter, this is a series of melencholy situations we can all relate to. And as the poet says "Please understand the true meaning of drunkenness".
