A whole life's experience of Austria has gone into this wonderful book. Making good use of his immense knowledge af the country and its people, Brook-Shephard takes you gently by the hand and leads you through the often complex history of Austria, - warts and all. On the last page you'll know as much about Austria as one can from a book. A pleasure to read too. Can't wait to go back...
I bought this book mainly because I wanted to read up on Austrian history before moving to Austria for a few months. I never expected the book to be so informative and easy-to-read. The author writes in a narrative style, including lots of anecdotes and interesting pieces of information that would not perhaps be included in other history books. I happily read whole chunks of the book at a time without noticing time passing by. If you want to know about Austria and her history, buy this book!
Magnificent magnum opus of a fascinating period in history. Very interesting to have an insight into the humanity of kings, emperors and politicians of the time. Such detailed research is truly staggering
Uneasily approaching this after a weekend in Innsbruck - a wonderful city, which turned me into an Austriaphile - it turned out to be anything but the dry, dusty tone I had feared. Enthralling and very easy to read.
