Like any of Ian Simpson's books, this is excellent. Not so much exactly a how to, but a how to think about it before you start book. This will definitely help you to up your game as a landscape painter. Bargain price too, thanks.
This is NOT a 'how to' book. Lets see Ian Simpson own words: «This book has been written for all categories of practising landscape painters, but as it has developed it has also become relevant to another group of readers. From the first, I wanted it to have, as a significant element, interviews with distinguished landscape painters. I chose for these interviews Roger de Grey, Lawrence Gowing, John Piper, Keith Grant, Derek Hyatt, Olwyn Bowey and Norman Adams. As I talked to these artists I realized that what they had to say about their own painting and that of others would also be of interest to those wishing to understand more about painting without necessarily wishing to paint themselves. If you are a painter this book aims first and foremost to improve your painting. If you are interested in landscape painting but not a painter yourself, it aims to increase your knowledge of how artists work and your appreciatian of landscape painting.» (Page 8) Thats it! And it is awesome.
