The most ACCURATE review of this novel was written by Harold R. Decker on November 1, 2008. He gave it 5.0 out of 5 stars and commented: Prophetic, on many levels. You can find his review by looking past the two main reviews (the most positive & negative reviews) and it will be the 4th review down from there. He is the only reviewer of the ones I've read that has nailed spot on exactly what Ms Caldwell was striving to educate the public about. It all started with the radical progressive Woodrow Wilson circa 1913 with 3 steps. 1. Establishing an "INCOME" tax by a suspiciously attained Amendment (Used by the Fed Gov to Control the States by doling out or withholding taxpayers money) 2. Establish the Federal Reserve System (Private bankers controlling the currency of America) 3. Amend the Constitution to have Senators voted in by popular vote thus transferring away the States' right of choice of choosing their own representation and turning it over to the Feds. "Ceremony" was prophetic in predicting a progressive take over of America when you fast forward 100 years to Barack Obama who is Woodrow Wilson on steroids. Like Ayn Rand who lived through tyranny before immigrating to America and warned us in her writings - Taylor Caldwell was not a "conspiracy theorist" but she was a historian with a keen sense of history and societies giving her an insight of what was coming.
One reviewer was aghast that Jeremy, the protagonist of "Ceremony," spoke against Democracy therefore he couldn't be the "good guy" in her estimation. Democracies only last on the average, 225 years, but remember what Ben Franklin told us: "We have given you a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy, if you can keep it!" But since a Progressive Federal Government has been usurping the States' powers and rights over a hundred years, we are starting to suffer a Democracy's fate: extinction in just 240 years . Caldwell was warning that we as a country were approaching a Socialist abyss and no country has ever returned from that abyss.
