A Very Good Book about the Doinant Political Figure of the 1960s and 70s

Harold Wilson by Ben Pimlott is a very good book about the first and so far only leader of the Labour Party to have triumphed in four general elections. It is well-written, informative and detailed, if perhaps a little too sympathetic towards it subject. However, the story that is told about the boy from Huddersfield who through ability and talent became an exceptionaly brilliant student and eventually leader of the country is inspiring. The fact that this biography also shows that Harold Wilson was more of a schemer and a politician than a statesman, and that this led to some very bad decisions being taken which damaged Wilson, the Labour Party and the country should take nothing away from the fact that for over a decade Harold Wilson was the dominant figure in British politics. All in all a very good book.
