Customer Review

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2018
I tend to walk between 40 to 70 miles a week predominately on flat terrain mostly around local lakes or canal towpaths.
For the last couple of years I've used Salomon Ultra X2 and then X3s. The X2s were great, the X3s proved to be a ever so slightly narrow and very stiff uppers, taking quite some time to wear in. With the X2s more or less discontinued and very high price to get, I decided to get a pair of these based on high reviews.

When first worn they appeared to fit perfectly. Not too heavy, with firm soles. Wearing them for day to day walking to and around the office to break them in, was a joy.

However on my first extended walk past 30 minutes in them is when the problems arose, as I started to get pinched nerve under and to the outside of my right little toe.

I don't know what's causing it exactly, it maybe the soles are too hard ( slightly more padding in the Salomons ). Or it could be I've got used to what seems like a slightly raised inner heal on the Salomons which suit my stride pattern with a slightly arthritic right hip, where the Merrells don't appear to have this and maybe I'm pushing out with my right foot more rather than walking through the ball.

Whatever it is though is being brought on by these shoes, as going back to my Salomon X3s I don't get the problem. Its a shame as I do like these, but now being relegated to my office footwear, as I've just now ordered another pair of Salomon's for which I'll have to bear the painful break-in for the next week or so.
