Hit the Right Notes with a Digital Piano
While they look similar, electronic keyboards and pianos differ in how you play them. When playing any type of piano, you use both hands to play the melody and music accompaniment. A keyboard features technology that plays the accompaniment for you, so you only play the melody. There are many different types of pianos, including grand, upright and digital pianos. The most obvious benefit of both keyboard and digital options is their portability. They also take up less room than an upright or grand. Both of these options come with a number of features that help mimic the sound and feel of a traditional piano. They offer a selection of benefits traditional options do not as well, such as track recording, touch sensitivity and split capability.
Most electric pianos mimic the sound of an upright or grand piano. Some may also mimic the sounds of other instruments, such as string instruments. Many also feature weighted keys, which feel like a regular piano's keys. There are different classes of weighted keys: light-, semi-, medium-, full- and heavy-weighted. The higher the class, the more difficult pressing down on the keys is. Some are also touch-sensitive, which means the harder you push on the keys, the louder the sound produced.
Digital pianos feature built-in memory. Many let you record tracks as you play them for future listening. Some also offer dual and split mode. These qualities are beneficial for teachers and students who practise together on the same piano keyboard. The split mode lets you split the keyboard into two zones. The dual mode lets you use two different piano sounds in each zone, one side could sound like a grand piano, while the other sounds like a string instrument.
Many modern electric and digital pianos have several ports, such as AUX, USB and MIDI. The MIDI and USB ports let you share information with other electronic devices. These ports, for instance, let you transfer recorded music from the piano to your computer for editing. An AUX port on an electric piano lets you connect to other electronics and electronic accessories, such as speakers, headphones or MP3 players.
