More SMEs set to benefit from the digital economy in 2018
We’re pleased to announce new research showing that for many UK SMEs, their new year’s resolution involves ramping up digital adoption to help grow their businesses. Today’s Q4 2017 SME Growth Tracker, a report by Capital Economics commissioned by us and Enterprise Nation, reveals that nearly 9 in 10 SMEs expect to be selling online by the end of next year compared to 64 per cent of SMEs who say they sell online today.

Supporting local families during the festive season
We are delighted to have supported families at Christmas for a second consecutive year through a series of donations to Home-Start UK. We have donated £2,000 to 16 local branches of Home-Start to support children and families living in the communities neighbouring our fulfilment centres, development centres and head offices.

Amazon Publishing win adult Book of the Year at 2017 Futurebook Awards
The annual Bookseller Futurebook conference brings together leading thinkers in publishing, retail, editorial, marketing and tech. It is the largest annual digital publishing event in Europe. At this year’s conference in Bishopsgate, London, Amazon Publishing’s crime imprint, Thomas & Mercer, and the Kindle in Motion team were awarded the Book of the Year (adult) for Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert by Patricia Cornwell. Amazon had two titles in the running, the other being The Sky Below: A True Story of Summits, Space, and Speed by Scott Paranzynski.

Rural businesses see digital technology as key to growth but face skills and training barriers
Today, Rural England and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) published their interim findings about the use of digital tools and services by businesses in rural areas. The report, commissioned by us earlier this year, aims to understand how to grow the digital economy in rural areas through e-commerce, exports and productivity gains, the level of digital skills and capabilities in rural areas and how to further improve them, and what digital business tools and services best support rural businesses.

Congrats to Mike Doodson for winning our Christmas Writing Competition
After hundreds of entries, we’re delighted to share that Mike Doodson, 30, has been crowned the winner of Amazon’s second annual Christmas writing competition with his story A Christmas Squirrel. In the search for a modern-day interpretation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Doodson received the prize of having his story illustrated by celebrated artist Ian Beck, a £2,000 Amazon.co.uk Gift Card, a top-of-the-range Fire tablet and a marketing campaign to support the launch of the book.

Amazon Lends Support to This is the Place, Choose Love, Manchester
In the wake of the tragic Manchester Arena attack last May, creatives across Manchester came together over the summer to create the coffee table book called This is the Place, Choose Love, Manchester. The book contains unique illustrations, designs and photographs set against lines from Tony Walsh’s memorable poem which was read at the vigil for the victims of the Manchester attack. Profits from this book are going to Manchester-based charities Forever Manchester, We Love MCR Emergency Fund and The Greater Manchester Mayor’s Homelessness Fund.

Junior inventors go behind the scenes at our Cambridge Development Centre
Local girls and boys with an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) were given an inspiring look behind the scenes of our Cambridge Development Centre during a special skills event last week. The event was organised in partnership with Robogals, an international student run organisation that aims to inspire and empower young women to consider studying engineering and related fields. The organisation offers interactive, engineering-based workshops for girls aged between 8-18 all around the world. Twenty local teenagers attended the event and worked with the Amazon Cambridge team and Robogals to build a skill for Alexa—a capability that can be controlled or interacted with via voice.

Giving the next generation the fuel to learn
The Amazon team had a great day today, visiting St John’s CE Primary School in Bethnal Green to launch a new initiative with UK charity Magic Breakfast providing over 700,000 healthy breakfasts in the 2016-2017 school year to over 3,800 children in 57 schools around the country.

Customer reviews are one of the most valuable tools we offer customers for making informed purchase decisions, and we work hard to make sure they are doing their job. In just the past year, we’ve improved review ratings by introducing a machine learned algorithm that gives more weight to newer, more helpful reviews; applying stricter criteria to qualify for the Amazon verified purchase badge; and suspending, banning or suing thousands of individuals for attempting to manipulate reviews.

The panel examined the important issue of how to make working part-time at a senior level a success for employees and employers alike. Joining Katie on the panel were senior figures from the world of advertising, the legal profession and retail, all of whom shared their experiences about how they made working part-time work for them.

Last night at the National Business Awards, FanDuel was named as the Amazon Digital Business of the Year. Founded in the UK in 2009, FanDuel is an online fantasy sports game which offers contests in American football, basketball, baseball and hockey. They have achieved significant growth in the US in recent years and looks set to replicate that success across the world.

Amazon has been named one of the most popular graduate employers by The Guardian in the paper’s prestigious Guardian 2016/2017 UK 300 survey, a list that ranks the UK’s top 300 employers, voted on by students and graduates. Following the launch of AmazonFresh last month for customers in select London postcodes, Amazon.co.uk today announced the introduction of Amazon Dash. Dash is a quick and easy way to place a grocery order on Amazon.co.uk. Customers can scan a product barcode or say the name of a product to add items automatically into their Amazon.co.uk basket. These items are then ready for purchase the next time the customer visits the Amazon.co.uk website or mobile app.

Amazon among top UK employers in LinkedIn’s Top Attractors List
Amazon has been named as one of the top UK companies for both attracting and retaining talent, according to LinkedIn’s first-ever Top Attractors list. LinkedIn and Censuswide Research analysed the activities of over 433 million LinkedIn members as well as surveyed data from over 6,000 employees. They found that Amazon ranks 9th among UK companies, based on job applications, views and connections on our career page, and retention of new employees. The full global list is here.

Doug Gurr appointed UK Country Manager for Amazon
We are pleased to announce today that Doug Gurr has been named Amazon’s new UK Country Manager. Doug is currently the Country Manager of our business in China, a role he’s had for the past two years. He first joined Amazon in the UK in 2011 as Vice President of our Hardlines division, which covers products like lawn & garden and toys. Doug will take up his new role in late May, coinciding with the departure of Christopher North, while continuing to support the transition of his current responsibilities to his successor in China.
