It was purchased to use with a set of external 2.1 speakers (Microlab FC330's) which would normally plug in the the line out/headphone socket on my Mac (2011 iMac with Snow Leopard). I found it frustrating that if I wanted to just use the internal speakers when not listening to music, I had to keep on unplugging the jack from the line out and put it back in again when I wanted to use the speakers. This little thing has allowed me to swap around as I please without any further unplugging/plugging so I'm very happy about that - I simply hold 'alt' and click on the speaker icon in the menu bar and choose whether I wish to use the internal or USB PnP Sound Device.
As for the device itself, I bought the black one with the short cable going to the USB plug. It has the '5H' in the grey rectangle printed on the topside. It was cheap and delivery from Hong Kong wasn't too bad if I remember correctly. It works fine on my iMac and is plug and play as described, so no drivers needed - it shows up in the sound preferences and works as it should. I can adjust the volume and muting via the keyboard controls on my Mac.
The sound quality is also fine - it sounds no different to the line out and I've not noticed any buzzing, crackling or distortion of any sort. The only downside I've noticed is when the computer is put to sleep. Upon waking, the device reverts to full volume output. I don't know why this happens but it can sometimes be a bit of a shock if you're listening to something via the internal speakers and decide to change to the externals. A quick double tap of the volume up/down keyboard controls sees it go back again. I've got used to this 'quirk' now and can't really grumble considering how cheap it was. Perhaps worth noting is that the virtual surround software is unavailable for Mac users, should that be a requirement.
If it wasn't for those things it'd be 5 stars.
Also, for some reason, it didn't work with my noise cancelling headphones; the sound becomes blocked whenever noise cancelling is enabled, doesn't occur with other devices.
Only slight criticisms are:
- Delivery took around 2 weeks from China.
- USB is a bit loose and isn't the best fit in the world
But other than that, it's great!
Packaging looked rough, and took ages to arrive. Shouldn't expect much for such a cheap price, but have bought other USB sound cards for £1-2 more which have been much better!
