I've added a scan of the CD case back to this Amazon page which shows the 'Track' Listing.

Being not much younger than this comedy genius means I have been aware of him right from the start of his 'career', him being American has created a problem being able to see him perform regularly but I did manage to hear him quite often on the radio at least (Radio 2 on Saturdays I think).

Nowadays it doesn't really matter as you can get this CD (collating 2 earlier separate CDs onto 1) to experience him from performances dating back to the '80s; there is also a more recent CD from around 2001 - here's the Amazon link :

Emo

I find it difficult to properly describe his 'type' of humour, but it is essentially a series of 2-liners of what I believe are referred to as 'garden path' sentences, where the first sentence leads you 'down the path of understanding' only for the second 'punchline' sentence to scotch your just-formulated 'expectation'. This means it is quite easy to either miss the punchline or not properly appreciate it, especially as Philips is usually already embarking on delivering yet another quip...! What I certainly can be definitive about is that whilst not overly rude or offensive, his humour is definitely more adult-orientated in nature.

Just as significant about his act is his appearance and delivery. Whether his on-stage appearance or voice are genuine in his 'normal' life (if his life is ever normal !

If you've never heard this man, let alone seen him on t.v. when he was at his best, just buy this. Don't mess about - buy it. This comic is really one of the most original ever to walk the planet. It's a pity you can't see him as he performs, dressed in a weird almost child like garb, squirming and ruffling his hair as he gives up his most deeply buried thoughts about his place in life, and who shows a complete misunderstanding of the normal social mores. It's clear that his character was brought up by pretty weird parents and that he has developed into some kind of misanthrope , but he delivers his spiel in such a way the absurd and bizarre becomes the most normal things in his view, and vice-versa.And very, very funny One of my favourite bits is where he says his father told him that whatever he does he's not to open the cellar door - "but when I did I saw things I'd never ever seen before, beautiful things -trees grass, birds" (paraphrased). Or when he talks of his family "My brother says hello......so...hooray for speech therapy".
There aren't many comics who deserve the term genius, but I think Emo is one of them.

I have been a fan of Emo Philips since I first saw him on tv decades ago and have been lucky enough to see him live at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This CD contains two of his older live shows and provides a great introduction to his comedy. His stage persona, delivery and material are unique. Every joke or observation needs a little thought on the audience's part and the humour is always from an unexpected twist. How he remains so likeable despite the subject matter that he covers and the way he presents his character's personality traits is a mystery to me. Highly recommended!
