Professor Matt O'Leary is Professor of Education at Birmingham City University (BCU). Matt has worked as a teacher, teacher educator, head of department, educational researcher and director of research for over 25 years in colleges, schools and universities in England, Mexico and Spain. Much of his work and research is rooted in the field of teacher education, particularly exploring the relationship between education policy and the continuous professional development of teachers. He researches and writes about a range of topics exploring the relationship between educational policy and practice.
Matt is well known for his work on classroom observation and is regarded as the first educational researcher in the UK to investigate and critique the practice of graded lesson observations. His books include: Classroom observation: A guide to the effective observation of teaching and learning (2014); Reclaiming lesson observation: supporting excellence in teacher learning (2016) and Teaching Excellence in Higher Education: Challenges, Changes and the Teaching Excellence Framework (2017, Emerald).
