Dr Mary Welford qualified as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Manchester in 1999. For over a decade she worked with many of the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) greats, such as Professor Adrian Wells and Professor Anthony Morrison. However, it was her interest in the enhancement of therapy for those who didn't do so well using traditional forms of CBT that brought her to the work of Professor Paul Gilbert.
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) offers insights, hope and, most importantly, solutions for many individuals and communities. Working as part of a team, Mary helped to develop the approach, was a founding member of the Compassionate Mind Foundation, and in 2012 authored The Compassionate Mind Approach to Building Self-Confidence using Compassion Focused Therapy.
Mary now lives and works in the South West of England. For a born and bread northerner, this was quite a change! However bigger changes to Mary's life have been brought about by CFT. Her self-critical mind is a lot quieter these days, whilst her compassionate one is getting stronger. It's a nicer one to be in and a change she highly recommends.
