My name is Roberta Kagan, but I also write under the pen names of Carli Lauren (young adult) and Veronika Knight(mysteries and paranormal).
When I was a child my mother had a black suitcase in the basement that she forbid me to open. Of course, if you tell a child "you must not look at this" the first thing they do as soon as they are able is to open the Pandora's box...
So, when my mother was out one afternoon, I raced downstairs to see what the secret was. When I opened the suitcase I found old pictures and letters. The letters had been written in a foreign language. Curiosity got the better of me and I asked my mother what it all meant. She had been trying to shelter me. My mother was Jewish. It was then that I discovered that she had lost her entire extended family in Germany during the Holocaust. I was also to learn that my father, who was Romany lost his relatives as well. That began an exhaustive research on my part that resulted in several novels and a short story set in this period. These are all written under my name, Roberta Kagan. By writing about these horrific events it is not my wish to bring sadness, but to bring understanding, hope and tolerance. And also to offer comfort to anyone who suffers in any way by showing that even in the darkest hour there is always a flicker of light.
It is my belief that only through knowledge that can prevent history from repeating itself.
Blessings to all of you and thank you for honoring me by reading my work.
