I'm a poet and a dancer. My first collection of poems Inside the Castle was brought out in 1969. In 1970 I got invited to join the program for International Writers at Iowa Uni. I read at Poetry International in 1973. In 1986 my novel In the Company of Others was published by Marion Boyars - that's about dancing in the Royal Ballet. Another novel Oblivion has been published by Grey Suit editions, that's about the tango. Play-scripts of my own performances with The Theatre of Mistakes are also published by Grey Suit Editions.
My poems have appeared in The New Statesman, The Spectator and The Times Literary Supplement.
My Analysis of Performance Art is published by Routledge. I got into The Theatre of Mistakes in the seventies. This was a performance art company - we made a human waterfall at the Haywood Gallery. I write articles on art, dance, performance and poetry and they have appeared in magazines like Art Monthly, The London Magazine and Harpers & Queen. In 1969 I was short-listed for a Pernod Poetry Award and in 1997 I was short-listed for a Paul Hamlyn Award.
I also love to translate and my versions of the Silvae of Statius were well received while Plague Lands, my versions of the poems of Iraqi poet Fawzi Karim, were a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for 2011. I write regularly for The Fortnightly Review.
