I’m a crime writer with a cautious interest in the paranormal. The Merrily Watkins series is a collection of darkish thrillers about the diocesan exorcist for Hereford: crime novels with smudgy hints of something else.
They occupy an odd place between genres, slightly more than crime, sometimes a little scary but not exactly horror (feel free to disregard the genre classifications above - algorithms are illiterate) Anyway, it's all as authentic as I can make it - this is what contemporary exorcists actually do; the series is set on the Welsh border, an area heavy with folklore, ancient monuments and landscape mystery. I'm looking for mystery in the original sense, where modern crimes are absorbed into an older fabric. There are earlier books, coming from the same psychic hinterland, including two historical novels with a new take on the Elizabethan magician Dr John Dee.
