No point to this review apart from some nostelgia, My iriver was purchased 5th December 2004 and I used it as my primary MP3 for about 5 years eventually moving my music mostly to an iPhone, however I continued to use it as a back up MP3 player for many more years as phone storage capacity wasn't very big for many years. I still boot it up sometimes and have a play with it and it's still faithfully running all these years later, battery life is still decent too!

Still works 16 years later !

I hesitated a while before opting to buy this player, read lots of review of the competition. Main features I wanted were there - a reasonable sized disk drive, direct recording and an easy file entry system. So I decided to buy.
The unit comes in a well designed pack with cables, phones and microphone. I didn't miss the cradle or extra battery pack for the "full fat" version. It looks very good, is a comfortable size and attaches easily to your belt in the carry case.
Initial charge up took about 3 hours, as promised. Loading files was very quick - once you realise you have to press the play button after connecting to the computer otherwise it's just sitting charging and isn't recognised by the computer. I reckon it loads mp3 files at around 1 gig per minute or so. Folder arrangement is straightforward for anyone familiar with Windows files. Loading video (.avi) files and pictures is straightforward too.
The one gripe I have about the player is the lack of ease of seeing what's playing or changing folders unless you have the player in your hand. You can't even change the volume without taking it out of its carry case (the remote control only comes as standard with the full fat version).
Functions are fairly straight forward but take a little getting used to - the manual is pretty lite on information about more detailed features. Recording from a "line in" source is very easy and you can vary the quality to suit. Great for ripping mp3 files from vinyl or audio streams. I haven't tried out the mic function yet. There are a lot of "shuffle" options which I don't fully understand, and I haven't tried making playlists. Equaliser options are easy & include 2 user set ones.
Quality of the radio isn't that good - tho maybe that's just my reception. I haven't used the supplied headphones, but sound on playback with my Shure EC2's is wonderful. Also, connecting up the unit to a hifi gives good quality playback with mp3 files encoded at 256 or above.
I've had the unit now for about a month and (with the exception of lack of remote) am very happy with it indeed - good solid bit of quality kit

Though I've given the H320 5 stars, I must admit to it having one major drawback. Yes, the sound quality makes Creative Zens and iPods look like transistor radios, and the pure skinnable customisable joy of the thing means it's a pleasure to use, and the range of file formats supported is as good as any out there, but there is a major downside to owning one. In short, what do you call it? The name iriver merely has others looking at you with blank expressions, and it's so much more than an mp3 player.
Ultimately you can call it what you will, because what really matters is that this is a wonderfully flexible bit of kit that meets a range of needs extremely successfully and can be skinned and modded up as much as you want. Playlists are child's play, pictures are easily managed and viewing videos is easy to set up.
We need more people in this country to know about iriver: get one and smirk.

When I set out to buy an MP3 player I intended to buy an iPod, having wanted one for several months. However, having read reviews for iPods and other players on Amazon, I settled on the iRiver H320 and 16 months on my only regret is that it looks like I won't be able to replace it with the same model when (hopefully in the far distant future) my current one dies.
It is, admittedly, chunkier than the iPod, but I feel this is more than made up for by the extra functionality. I was watching movies on this before iPods had the capability to do so. I've also recorded many of my favourite tapes and vinyl albums using it, and one of my favourite features is the capability to store and read text files. My family are well aware that I'm an inveterate bookworm - now with the iRiver I can have something to read wherever I am, just by tucking it in my back pocket. Of course it also comes with radio, ability to store and display pictures, and you can use it simply as a portable hard-drive.
I'm told that iPods have a simpler navigation system, but I found that creating 26 folders, one for each letter of the alphabet, and then storing albums alphabetically by artist means I can get to any song I want pretty quickly.
In short, I think this is a fantastic little device, and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't value fashion over substance!
Edit added 2019: It's still going strong! Fourteen years on since I bought it and I've had to replace the battery (twice) when it stopped holding charge, but that's literally the only problem I've had. I'm still using it for all my music, as the both the sound and battery are hugely superior to anything I could get on my phone, and I'm still reading on it, albeit less often. Without a doubt, this is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Now I'm just hoping it'll last for the next fourteen years....
