This film deserves far more credit than it appears to have received. Yes it is linked to the Exceptional Game of Thrones, mainly through the actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau but it offers so much more.

The story itself is driven by two central characters Martin played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Georg (Peter McDonald). Both orphans who are parted as youngsters and who undertake 2 very different journeys, Martin becomes a soldier Georg a Friar. 15 Years later they are reunited Georg has become a Friar of great standing within the city Martin a war weary soldier who has begun to question the rules set out by the Church. It is whilst visiting his long lost friend that Martin spies and falls in Love with the Executioners daughter Anna played by Anastasia Griffith . Thought to be amongst the lowest of the low (Historical fact: Executioners lived on the outskirts of the town or village where they plied their trade. They were considered to be untouchables and only an Executioner would marry another Executioners daughter). Martin fathers a child with Anna and being not only a man of honour but also madly in love with her he marries her and as a consequence must himself become the Executioner on the death of Anna's father, no other job being available to him once he became linked in such an intimate way with the Executioner and his family.

Fabio, the Executioners assistant is not pleased about this as he himself had expected (quite rightly) to marry Anna and take over from her father on his death and so he sets out to discredit Martin and destroy his family. How he does this I won't ruin by telling you but it involves a theft from the church and the arrival of the Inquisition which was never a good sign.

The level of research that went into this film is truly astounding.

The synopsis of this film is rather misleading where it describes 'swordplay abounds', this wrongly gives the impression that it is something of an action movie. It most definitely is not.
The script has been described as weak and doesn't develop the characters fully. With this I have to disagree, it is subtle and much is implied that has made these two boys into the men they became. I think that worked.
it is emotional, at times brutal, but again not overly graphic which is better than having every detail laid out for the viewer. You know what is happening without the need for over production and special effects.
performances from the cast were good, although some actors were typecast and you just knew how they would end up.
overall a very watchable film and I believe quite clever in its simplicity. A re
freshing change from big budget epics that leave nothing to the imagination.

Enjoyed this film. Unlike lots of these types of films there was a plot which was not entirely predictable which was refreshing. Kept you on the edge of your chair throughout as you just wanted to know what was going to happen next. Overall - not like anything else I have seen but thoroughly enjoyed it. One thing I would say is that it does show some medieval torture in parts which was mild - but perhaps not for younger children in the room.

Really like NCW so decided to rent movie. Disappointing script and direction somehow let down a very good cast, who still managed to turn in some good performances..
Overall good movie, though missed the opportunity several times to explore deeper relationships and motives.

All the actors were marvellous from the hero to the villains, Eddie Marsden and Stephen Berkoff.

People think that right from the start, battle lines were drawn between the Catholics and Protestants. This film shows otherwise as the kindly prior tries to combat the factually misnamed Anabaptists, when they were more likely to have been Martinists, early Lutherans, with reasoned argument and a measure of tolerance. But as we all know politics and the spite of a villain wronged combined to change the setting, bringing in the Inquisition to hunt down many more sympathisers with the Martinists, who may themselves yet have remained Catholics. Tough times, brutal torture and the extremism of the Spanish soldiers helping the Inquisitor Berkoff. Wow did I cheer when the hero slit his throat. Berkoff is so good in these roles.
