I've rarely watched a tv series that is quite as hit and miss as Under the Dome, its packed full of interesting ideas but not all of it really works.

The set up is basic but brilliant - a mysterious dome appears out of nowhere over Chesters Mill, a small American town. We then follow the townsfolk as they attempt to come to terms with life inside the dome and possibly find a way out. Based on the book by Stephen King and developed by Brian K Vaughan (a writer on Lost as well as various comics including the excellent Y The Last Man) it's very much a cross between Lost and The Stand.

The mystery of the dome is explored slowly but at times feels like a bit of a macguffin as the people trapped inside take centre stage. It seems virtually everyone in the town has a secret of some description so there's plenty of story to go around. There are some complex and interesting characters (Big Jim and his son Junior being standouts) but there are also a few walking cliches that drift in and out. The are moments of great invention but also some real eye rolling, head slapping developments. It's difficult to elaborate more without giving away too much about the plot.

Perhaps it's a case of a series finding its feet in the first season and some of the more interesting threads will be picked up in season two (the final episode here seems to suggest this). I'll be having a crack at season two to find out, in the meantime I'd recommend a go at this to make up your own mind (especially as it's on Amazon Prime at time of writing).

I was hooked on this mini-series after watching episode one. I have not read the book and did not know what to expect from the series. Every episode is packed with action, drama and mystery, and I loved every minute of it. However, I was disappointed that the series is only the first instalment of what is obviously a much longer story. Nowhere on the packaging or advertising material does it indicate "series one" or "first instalment". Consequently, when the last episode was over, and the story was left hanging, I went searching for "Disk 5" only to realise that I now have to wait until "Under the Dome Series 2" is released. I would have been less disapointed if I had known this up-front. So... (Amazon UK) Please include these details on your advertising for similar products in the future. Many Thanks.

"Under The Dome" is a sci-fi/fantasy series, based on the 2009 book by Stephen King.

This 1st season of the show was widely believed to be a one-off, which would explain the relatively straightforward narrative (later seasons of the show could hardly be deemed straightforward!) A large, impregnable dome comes down and cuts off the inhabitants of Chester's Mill from the outside world. Among them are an enthusiastic, cynical but good-hearted journalist (Julia Shumway), a brave, tough but shady ex-soldier (Dale 'Barbie' Barbara) and the town's opportunistic, scheming and ultimately murderous councillor/used car dealer, Big Jim. It is the clashes between these characters that drives the drama more than the more surreal moments that would come later - apart from one rather odd 'Fight Club'-style storyline halfway through the season.

Dean Norris is arguably the stand-out among the cast, with a major role in "Breaking Bad" among his credits: he is a revelation as the crooked and ruthless Big Jim, making him as magnetic as he is bullying and despicable. It is his bullying behaviour that seems to have turned his son, Junior, into an unhinged abductor, and he leaves several bodies in his wake as he desperately tries to maintain his dominance over the town. S1 of "Under The Dome" is not perfect - the acting of some of the supporting cast is a bit variable and the show's constant killing-off of the minor cast members would ultimately come to hinder it, but it's not nearly as bad as some might state.

After reading King's novel Under the Dome, I was looking forward to watching this television adaptation. What a huge disappointment. The series does not follow the book, it is extremely bloated and drawn out, it is political correctness gone mad and it is poorly acted. Please don't buy this, save your money and go down a pub and shout your mates a couple of rounds of drink. It is money better spent,

I'm a great fan of SF but this is just dire and I can't believe it has received so many stars..... but each to their own I suppose. I can't help but compare this with 'The Walking Dead' which features men and women fighting for survival against seemingly overwhelming odds. However, in the WD, the charcters and their actions are far more believable and have a much better script.
The 'Dome' starts with an interesting premise (a mysterious force field, or 'dome' encapsulates a community) but this descends into farce and parody. It's another 'LOST' which just throws up more mysteries every episode purely to keep the series going.
As others have said the dialogue is,well, diabolical. How the actors/actresses delivered some of their lines whilst keeping a straight face is beyond me.
Also, some of the human behaviour is unbelievable. For instance one of the well loved leading characters (female) is murdered with an axe. The culprit is revealed in a later episode but, after a bit of anger, people seem to shrug their shoulders and accept it. Really ??? In another scene,a leading character ends up with a steel tube through their thigh, suffers considerable blood loss (well you would wouldn't you), almost dies but after being rescued and 'treated' ends up running round like an Olympic athlete with hardly any limp and a bandage over their jeans !!

Add in the much cliched 'teen queen' (whose expression for the whole series is like a slapped backside) and her geeky boyfriend, men wearing all black uniforms with no insignia, a mysterious corporation (whose boss just happens to be the father of one of the characters), characters who keep dying and coming back, very dodgy special FX......I could go on but suffice to say I have given up watching.

I gave it 2 * because the first few episodes were quite good but the whole series then descended into farce.
