This strongly scripted revenge tale is chock full of well rounded characters and proper relationships. The gritty urban drama seeps class from every frame and the chemistry between Farrell and Noomi Rapace forms one of the strongest pairings I've seen in a long while. Rapace finally gets an English speaking role to get stuck into and Farrell can play the underdog anti-hero with his eyes shut. This is very much a human tale with little need for car chases and explosions although they do come along when the script requires. There are two revenge stories in here and the script also manages an offbeat but entirely engaging romance, all of which is simple but interesting. The final showdown, a one man assault on a heavily guarded mansion is hardly anything new but it was well crafted and exciting enough. I'm glad I ignored the critics because I really enjoyed going to see it(apart from the cost of the cinema ticket).

On paper it hardly sounds original. Hero's Wife and child killed by gang. Hero seeks to get revenge on gang. But the fact that neither the opening scene , nor indeed any other thereafter shows this heinous crime suggests there is considerably more thought and drama in Dead man Down than one might expect.
It all starts when a criminal gang led by Kingpin Alphonse Hoyt (Terrence Howard)find one of their number in a freezer with a few twisted clues left by his killer. As Hoyt seeks revenge on the man responsible we see Victor (Farrell) as his trusted right hand man saving his life whilst he looks to serve street justice on those suspected of offing his chums. Not is all as it seems, however, as the truth is slowly revealed throughout the film. Characters are far less one dimensional than your average goon. victor's co-gangster buddy Darcy talking about an appreciation for life now he has a wife and child, with an investigative mind like Colombo, Hoyt's silently menacing demeaner leaving you wondering if he knows more than he is letting on, the list goes on. Even love interest Naomi Rapace has her own agenda as a woman scarred after a horrific car accident. It makes proceeding more deep than you average Hollywood action flick
The lost wife and child element is told through a torn photo and old videos of happier times and not overplayed. there is no in your face execution scene here, allowing the audience to make up their own mind as to what actually happened. Instead the focus is on story and character development making the proceedings far more thoughtful than most films in it's genre. a refreshing change which actually adds an air of mystery rather than gung-ho machismo
This does mean that the dead man Down is not as action packed as the trailer may lead you to believe.

A dark gritty movie, which keeps you guessing for most of the movie. The acting on the whole is good, this is more than just about gangsters, there is revenge, a love story and friendship.

Colin Farrell's best movie for a long while.

Trusted Hungarian gangland hard man Victor (Farrell), infiltrates the gang that took his life away from him. But close to finalizing his master plan of revenge, his neighbor Beatrice (Rapace), disfigured from an accident, blackmails Victor into extracting her revenge first. He reluctantly agrees, but they begin to slowly fall in love with each other. Distracted from his own mission, his plan begins to unravel, as his employers get closer to uncovering his true identity.

Dead Man Down starts out & finishes with exciting & well produced action set pieces that open & close the story really well. Inbetween it slows down with the foreground of learning about the lead characters motivations through the suffering inside & outside they have had to endure. With the revenge scheming & the bad guys slowly tracking down the person who is after them, dipping in & out in the background. Now, while following the two leads close interactions it does result in the film lacking some pace in the middle portion of the film, as the star crossed lovers story is explored. So this will likely alienate some of the audience who came into this expecting primarily an all out action film.

But IMO in this exploration, the film endears us more to the two lead characters played brilliantly by Colin Farrell (Total Recall), as the solemn husband whose lost his family & sowing the seeds of his revenge. And Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) as the scarred beautician who is taunted & tortured by bullies & scared to show her face, blackmailing Victor to kill the man responsible for her disfigurement.
