Fairly tedious. As with many of these historically based dramas, the makers have decided to make it appear more 'real' by having very little lighting. That, coupled with the fact that everybody looks like everybody else, means that it's often hard to tell what's going on. Having a central hero (and his companions) with dubious morals doesn't really make the viewer warm to him. So life in nineteenth century New York was tough; yes, it was a dog eat dog environment, but do we really have to second guess which moral stance our 'hero' will take this episode? Also, what is it about writers, directors and producers that they make the prostitutes in their productions both attractive and women who enjoy their jobs? This just this gives a very false image on nineteenth century life when women were exploited in this way because there were no alternatives. Just once it would be good to see a more realistic depiction of women. To be fair, "Copper" is not alone in this.

"Copper" is a series that simply tries too hard. It doesn't really know what it wants to be - an historically accurate recreation of New York life, a tough cop series, a portrayal of the early days of forensic science, a mystery story or a depiction of political corruption? It tackles all of these, but somewhat half-heartedly. Hopefully, the next series will shed some light on the matter both literally and metaphorically.

Absolutely superb historic drama: the believability of the characters, the smell of the streets, the awful conditions of the poor, the contrast with the rich all becomes reality before your eyes: the job of the police, many of whom are not beyond pocketing a bonus or two where they can but at the same time meet violence with violence as the only currency the streets seem to understand. Oh, and the whore and the child - fabulous acting! Thoroughly recommend this to everybody.

Ripper Street for the Americans. It lacks the grit and honesty of the former. The acting doesn't stand up to the comparison either. I am deeply uncomfortable at Copper using a child prostitute to murder a man in cold blood. Even in those days I am sure any decent man would pull back from this. This is shock for shocks sake rather than character developement or historical accuracy. It is weak and uninvolving. Ripper street relies on characterisation and intense acting. This doesn't cut the mustard. This was dropped while the other goes from strength to strenght. Says it all

The eleven year old prostitute steals the show. Her acting reminds me of the young Dakota Faning, with an "old world"
twist. The backround of the American Civil war, is depicted in dark colors, with passions on both sides aiming at an uncompromising conclusion. The Law is in chaos, our protagonist is trying to introduce justice and reason into this world,
with sometimes outrageous methods. Thus creating a more realistic character, that reminds me of the danish miniseries
THE KILLING (Forbrydelsen). I hope this series will continue, it has a lot more potential.

As a Brit I was very pleased (and not overly surprised) to see that this is a BBC America production.
Their first foray into a non-UK based drama, as I understand it.
The cast is outstanding - with Kiara Glasco who plays Annie as one to watch for in the future.
It is cunningly interwoven with historical facts throughout the series.
The international cast is highly is highly believable in the roles they play, the plot rings true throughout.
It is supported with a production ambience that almost makes you smell the rotting filth in the streets and the body odour of the great unwashed poor.
Couple this with a completely engaging plot and you have several hours of TV well worth watching.

Set during the American civil war in New York, this show has it all. Great characters, a very dark atmospheric setting and a great story line.

There are some shows which just drift along this is certainly not one of them. The plot thickens as the show progresses and only gets better in season 2.

Its a must see.
