Amazon has done well with 'Alpha House' - it is genuinely funny with an excellent ensemble cast and even better writing. The first episode is okay but this is to be expected as the cast attempts to a grip on the material and us viewers, especially in the UK, try and understand the unfamiliar setting but the series really gets better and better and by the fourth episode you will be committed to 'Alpha House' for as long as it lasts and then some.

There are some really good ideas here and the writing is spot on bringing out the absurdity of partisan politics and the effect lobbyists with huge payouts ultimately have on both government and the wider society through the machinations of 4 Republican Senators who share a house (Washington DC is one of the most expensive places to live in). Three of the four are involved in re-election races within the GOP and all are worried about losing to candidates who are so far to the right that our lot are considered moderates or even 'lefties' within the party. This fear and insecurity leads to chaotic decision-making and ill-thought strategies that make for funny situations and encounters. The last member of the quartet is a smooth Latino lothario whose billionaire girlfriend is grooming him for the presidency.

There are some negatives - a few stereotypes and situations but overall this is a refreshingly funny comedy series set in American Politics. Recommended!

I just like anything that Clark Johnson is involved with acting or directing (season 5 of The Wire, Homeland, Homicide a Year on the Streets, The Shield) so my attention was drawn to this. Good to see Clark doing humor. There were a couple of laugh out loud moments in the first episode which encouraged me to keep watching. The look and feel of the whole show is classy. Comparisons are not always a good guide but as a means of describing what the show is like I would say it is not as out and out ludicrous as VEEP can be and although I'm only a few episodes in to Season 1 I feel it may have more interest than a simple lampoon. There are characters who are involving. Wanda Sykes is also in the show and I look forward to seeing more of her too. The shows are short under 25 min run time but they pack a lot in and don't seem rushed or hurried an give full value. The opening credit sequence in it's final shot makes sense of the 4 main characters as they walk down a corridor of power Lewis realising the others are all looking intently at their phones has to quickly pat his pockets to find his own and this in a single image reveals the hapless nature of his character. It is touches like that which distinguish Alpha House as one to watch. There are 3 seasons as I write this and I am looking forward to enjoying the rest of the shows.

This is the sort of humour I like but there is too much bad language for me to really enjoy it. See "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" for a better handling of political machinations. Well better to me anyway.

I'll try some further episodes to see how they deal with the politics rather than simply the "bad boy" behaviour more reminiscent of a frat house.

I looked at this when I needed something to fill half an hour. The first episode left me underwhelmed and the f*** count was high but now at episode 3 it has caught my imagination and the team is gelling; the gags are coming. John Goodman does not dominate - he blends in as a good ensemble actor should. Good stuff.

Absolutely loved both series. Alpha House is about a middle aged frat house inhabited by some very flawed VIP's. It features four class actors perfectly cast in their roles and bags of very sharp, very funny writing from Gary Trudeau. Between them, these Republican senators are a great mix of world-weary, beer loving, slobby, philosophical, deceitful, ambitious, comical, puritanical, nerdy, accident-prone, resourceful, decent, right wing and vain. I couldn't help liking the characters despite the shenanigans in which they engage. Their job is to remain in office and politics can be a dirty business. There's a strong thread of realism in their constant battle for good PR. The satire feels authentic. Wonderful performances, great writing. This deserves to be seen by a wider audience. Can we please have another series?

Well written,fun and light.
Someone criticized it as "not a house of cards" and gave it 1 star.
Its a comedy,it pokes fun at the system.
Its not war and peace.
Get a beer out, chew some pretzels and enjoy.

I am not a big TV watcher by any means but I love this. It made me frequently laugh out loud - it most obviously pokes fun at some Republican stereotypes but it has Democrats and politicians generally as targets too. The series becomes increasingly layered with the Ruby Shoals episode being particularly poignant. I really hope that there is a second series - it's just the top quality that you would expect from Gary Trudeau.
