FX's 9/11 drama Rescue Me is a refreshing and timely change to the politically correct television seen in recent times. Smartly written and brutally honest, each hour is an uncompromising peek into the lives of a group of New York firefighters post 9/11. Leary is fantastic (take a bow) in the lead role as Tommy Gavin, an unsettled, volatile survivor trying to deal with the loss of loved ones in the attacks and problems closer to family & home. Some may find it exploitive but the makers have undeniably pulled off a riveting mix of drama, tragedy, violence and humour. Bring on the second season!!

This one was out of the blue. Bought on an absolute wing and a prayer. I had read zero publicity, reviews or anything - just figured it had Dennis Leary in it and he wrote No Cure For Cancer, so it must be alright. Alright? Rescue Me is a revelation.

It follows - primarily - the fortunes of firefighter Tommy Gavin, 9/11 survivor, ex-alcoholic, Irish American, bull blood. Tommy is one messed up individual. It also records the day-to-day fortunes, habits and credo of the other firefighters in his station; each dealing with 9/11 in their own different ways and their own messed up lives.

What singles this series out is the script is so, so witty; written with the darkest, blackest humour possible. The dialogue between the firefighters is snappy and gritty and one emotes with the characters so easily. Tommy himself is a total love or hate him kind of person - which is what makes Rescue Me so good.

I Totally recommend this. Backdraft it is not - more like a cross between No Cure for Cancer and Six Feet Under. Awesome.

Rescue me has perhaps suffered from being on satelite television only as few people have heard of it, let alone seen it. It is however an excellant program, well worth checking out. It tells the story of a New York Fire Brigade crew in the years after 9/11 and manages to combine, humour, action and poignancy to great affect. Well worth checking out

'Rescue Me' hits hard, from the catchy and moving theme music to the honest, compelling protagonists. This is a show for people who like real drama, about real human suffering, pain and happiness. Since I first saw the show I've been hooked, and I would go so far as to say that it is essential viewing. It is hysterically funny at times, and has literally made me speechless with some of the tearjerking twists and turns which the plot takes the viewer on. You almost begin to feel like you are one of the fire-crew in the firehouse, empathising with the firemen as heroes, and human beings. Leary is fantastic as Tommy Gavin and the rest of the cast, notably Sunjata, soon become more than mere supporting acts. This, ladies and gentlemen, is television at its best. Compelling, addictive, exciting and unbelievably moving. Once you've started watching this show, you will follow the journey until the end, and I promise you, a fine journey it will be. Absolute genius.

After having enjoyed this show on tv i decided to buy the dvd set. however i`ve been dismayed to find that they seem to have edited out some bad language. This decision shows a lack of respect to both the programme makers and the viewers.

It also makes the whole idea of certification redundant. This set is a 15 certificate which is generally the norm for a show with such content. I have never enountered any other dvd sets which have been cut in this way. To my knowledge others have kept their bad language, violence, sex etc and been certificated accordingly.

It really spoils the show by cutting out the salty, realistic dialogue and dubbing over it with gibberish. It lessens the impact of some scenes as the original dialogue was often used for relevant dramatic or comic effect. Maybe it was broadcast this way originally. I can`t remember. If anyone out there knows anything about this matter i would appreciate some feedback. I don`t know if other versions such as the Region 1 dvd or blu-ray sets are the same. This would be a shame as it hampers a great show which is otherwise well presented by these sets in terms of picture, sound & extras

Anyone that saw Denis' previous series "The Job" during it's short lived run on satellite will notice the distinct similarities between the two shows. Both of them centre around Leary's lead character who has some kind of addiction problem (pills in The Job, drink in Rescue Me) and is trying to balance a wife & kids, girlfriend and career without losing any of them due to his addiction. He's typically bitter and sarcastic in both, as you'd expect from Leary and the only real difference between the two, apart from one being a detective show and one being a fireman show, is that Rescue Me is more dramatic. That and the makers of The Job appear to have failed to release the DVD box set in England, which is a mistake.
This series is excellent. Now we just need the Job and Denis' stand-up shows on DVD. Why should America have all the laughs?

This show has so many levels, a breadth of vision that ensures each episode is packed with incident. Balancing pathos at the struggles and additions that afflcit many of us, whilst retaining a dark and not so dark comedy, is tough, and this show pulls it off every time.

I was thrilled when I heard that Denis Leary starred and wrote in a series. I had enjoyed his comedy from the early 90s, though not his cameo performances in some forgettable movies. He has stamped his personality on a tremendous idea and cast of supporting characters.

There have been many fine series from the US recently; 'Six Feet Under', 'Deadwood', 'Carnivale', 'The Wire' - Rescue Me is without doubt the finest of them. So join Tommy Gavin and the crew as they grant pleasure after pleasure.
