In the afterlife you may find that God is the size of a microbe and unaware of your existence. Or you may find the afterlife contains only those people whom you remember. In some afterlives you are split into all your different ages; in some you are recreated based on your credit-card records; and in others you are forced to live with annoying versions of yourself that represent what you could have been.

In these wonderfully imagined tales - at once funny, wistful and unsettling - Eagleman kicks over the chessboard of traditional notions and offers us a dazzling lens through which to see ourselves here and now. His stories are rooted in science and romance and awe at our mysterious existence: a mixture of hope, love and death that cuts through human nature at innovative angles.

Product description

Review

"Witty, bright, sharp and unexpected . . . as surprising a book as I've read for years.Every story is a new Heaven." -- Brian Eno

"A very well-written, very funny and very thought-provoking book that makes you realize that when it comes to the afterlife, most religions suffer from an acute shortage of imagination.
Sum immediately made me think of several more alternative afterlives" ― Yuval Noah Harari

"SUM is terrific. It's such a good idea that I was grinding my teeth all the way through wishing I'd thought of it first. The inventiveness, the clarity and wit of the prose, the calm air of moral understanding that pervades the whole thing, add up to something completely original. I hope Sum will be the great big hit it deserves to be." -- Philip Pullman

"Brilliantly realised, blazingly original,
Sum isn't so much about the next life as this one. Eagleman's stories - parables? - a chilly reminder of our foibles and delusions." -- Colin Waters ― Sunday Herald Published On: 2009-05-03

"40 intriguing tales describing different heavenly scenarios ... and all formidably imagined ... Readers may discover much to appreciate - not least the lives they are living now, still so much better than some nightmares in these pages ... quirky, occasionally unsettling ... never short of new new ideas, all of them rolled out with style." -- Nicholas Tucker ―
Independent Published On: 2009-05-11

"This delightful, thought-provoking little collection belongs to that category of strange, unclassifiable books that will haunt the reader long after the last page has been turned. It is full of tangential insights into the human condition and poetic thought experiments ... full of touching moments and glorious wit of the sort one only hopes will be incopious supply on the other side." ―
The New York Times

"This stunningly original book is little more than 100 pages long. You can get through it in an hour, but you'd be mad to hurry, and you will certainly want to return to it many times ...
Sum has the unaccountable, jaw-dropping quality of genius. It seems exquisitely adapted to fill the contemporary longing for a kind of secular holy book." -- Geoff Dyer ― Observer Published On: 2009-06-07

"It does what it says in the title - satirical, playful, troubling, inventive, thought provoking and often funny takes on possible afterlives. A complete one off. I've been buying it and giving to friends and family. Everyone is delighted. Keep by the bed and feed yourself one or two before turning out the light." -- Andrew Greig ―
Sunday Herald Published On: 2009-11-29

"Mind-bending . . . Thought-provoking and life-affirming with the dose of humour I enjoy. To help me appreciate the here and now rather than agonising about the "what-ifs"" ―
Daily Telegraph

"SUM is an imaginative and provocative book that gives new perspectives on how to view ourselves and our place in the world." ―
Alan Lightman, author of EINSTEIN'S DREAM

Review

Sum is terrific... The inventiveness, the clarity and wit of the prose...add up to something completely original.

This slim volume contains a series of very short stories or musings about a variety of afterlives that range from the poignant and thoughtful through to the plain laugh-aloud funny. The first story in the collection, Sum, is a classic example of what the book offers. Eagleman proposes that in this version of the Afterlife, we get to experience everything that happened to us during our lives on Earth. The difference this time around, is that everything occurs in solid blocks of time. So you spend thirty years asleep; five months sitting reading on the toilet; two days lying; fifteen hours writing your signature... The list is a lot longer, but you get the idea. By the end, you are desperate for a break and dream that heaven is a place where you experience these monumental blocks in manageable slices. I don't normally give Spoilers during my reviews, but I've made an exception with this exceptional book so the elegance and wit of this short story can be fully appreciated. Besides, there are thirty-nine other tales to enjoy, so I haven't majorly diminished the reading experience in letting this little kitten out of the bag.

As with any anthology, some of the stories work better than others. Sum is one of the better ones - but it is by no means my favourite. A word of caution, though. It might be a very small book and you could easily whizz through it in one sitting. Don't. My advice is never to read more than two of these little stories at a time because to do so is to risk becoming inured to the sheer amazing leaps of imagination Eagleman is asking you to take.

I'm in two minds about the writing. While Eagleman hasn't wasted a single word in conveying his fantastic ideas in a very clear, matter of fact manner, I have a hunch that in places the application of a little purple prose might help his readers keep hold of the sheer enormity of the subject they are being asked to consider.
For me, it is when Eagleman allows the emotion to break through that these clever musings are elevated to real brilliance. The stand-out stories for me when this happens, are Egalitaire, Metamorphosis, Mirrors, Will-o'-the-Wisp and Apostasy. I hasten to add that the rest still provide plenty of brain fodder, surprise and interest, but these five also caught my soft spot...

A very good collection of themed shorts – 4 Stars

There are many reasons I enjoyed this collection. Here are just a few:
    ● Each tale is only a few pages long – perfect reading for lunch breaks.
    ● Although the concept of God appears in some tales, this is not a book centred on religion or religious beliefs.
    ● The collection works to evoke a range of emotions – some of the ‘Afterlives’ were pleasing constructs, others definitely not.
    ● The concepts of life and death are not fixed – the author is just as inventive with imagined timescales.
    ● The book is well written and well presented – the number of editing errors in the Kindle version I read was minimal.
    ● As with all collections, I liked some of the tales more than others, but each was so short I never felt ‘bogged-down’ by any one of them.

The only reason I didn’t give this the full 5 Star rating is I felt the tales were heavily weighted towards maths, science and technology, and perhaps a few ideas centred around a more arts orientated interpretation would have added an additional dimension. That said, this is a very good read, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something thought provoking and a little bit different.

Excellent. I read this a few years ago and fell in love with it. Bought several copies for presents as it affected me so much. The response I had to this book has stayed with me for years. And so easy to read as it is a series of short chapters that can be dipped in and out of.

Having read some of the weaker review scores, I was apprehensive about buying this book, but the topic and impressive list of cover reviews intrigued me.
My conclusion is that the book is a 'curate's egg'.
I failed to find anything remotely resembling genius in its covers, but there is certainly a fair smattering of original thought mixed with modified versions of old themes and ideas. If you are tolerant of the style of writing, I think the structure of 40 short imaginings (mostly 2-3 pages) makes an enjoyable excursion that one can dip into over the course of a few days to cover the entire material.
Whilst reading the text, I was conscious that the stories are the product of someone who has worked as a stand-up comedian, where brevity and punchlines are important.
Having now read the book, I do still find some of the cover reviews somewhat amazing, although I recognise that not all reviewers read a book they are asked to comment upon, nor are their clipped comments always reprensentative of all reviewers. After all, no author in their right mind is likely to agree to their publisher printing that the book is 'not worth reading.' Nevertheless, I'm afraid that I did not feel the book represents 'jaw-dropping quality of genius' (Observer) or that one 'will not read a more dazzling book this year' (Stephen Fry). However, is due to the author and publisher for rounding up such an impressive and positive range of reviews. After all, that is what these comments are there for: namely, to help sell the book.
On the positive side, I did enjoy many of the imaginings, both for their humour and in a few cases, their originality. If the book consisted of the 20 best stories, then I should have been more inclined to score it with 4 stars, but I felt that some of the stories were simply modifications of ideas that have been around in the philosophy, mysticism or science fiction literature for a long, long time.
Eagleman certainly applies his knowledge from psychology to capture and weave together the many mundane, the peculiar, the bizarre in our lives and reconstruct them in some amusing and on occasions highly original ways. For this he deserves credit. However, I should temper my expectations when purchasing this book, so as not to have a disappointing experience on reading its pages. Also, I am glad a read the book, since the few genuinely original ideas between its covers are a delight to encounter.

The stories are quite short (2-4 pages) but some of them are quite original and might leave you thinking for a little bit afterwards. The entire collection is also short. You can probably read it in an hour or two. I think it could be really nice as a present, as a palate cleanser in-between books or something to pick up during a short break.

I read this book years ago, taking turns chapter by chapter on a beach reading it out loud with a friend. The stories stuck with me so before a camping trip I bought again and on the trip we all took turns picking a random chapter to read out loud to each other. Just fun little stories that make you think about life in a different perspective.

I want to buy many copies of this book and give out to friends.
