Commanded by the controversial Major-General Ivo Thomas, the 43rd (Wessex) Division was branded the "Fighting Yellow Devils" out of respect by its Wehrmacht and Waffen SS opponents. The 43rd's distinctive divisional badge of a golden Wyvern - half-serpent half-dragon - was to be seen in all the ferocious battles in Normandy, the Low Countries and Germany between June 1944 and May 1945. They suffered 12,500 casualties including 3000 killed in action. This publication tells the story of the division's campaign in Northwest Europe, from Normandy to Bremerhaven, in the words of the soldiers who actually fought with it: privates, sergeants and young company commanders, all have their individual stories to tell. I bought this to read up on my dad's regiment. He sadly died in 2015 at the age of 96. He was my hero. He had told me stories of things he got up to while waiting to cross the channel, some very funny. Some of his stories of what happened when he got over to Normandy were very sad but some things could not talk about. The Wessex Wyverns were a very highly trained unit and were feared by the Germans. Reading this book revealed just what these men did along with other regiments. Anyone interested in the Normandy Landings will not be disappointed. It just made me more proud of my dad.

My dad was in the 43rd ..said very little & has since died , SO....this is the only way I can follow him thru the mud & the blood with the heroic 43RD. Those wondering re the choice tween hardback & softback - the paperback is ok but the hardback is a leap in quality . The hardback is larger ,contains maps left out of the soft, extra photos & quality paper . As you read this book you realise how few films even present a small percent of the real battle for OUR survival .
Out of interest...it,s VERY interesting to read first DUNKIRK by Hugh Sebag - Montefiore & as you finish you,ll think "hell I hope to god something was learned out this " ..well ..it WAS !
