I was really daunted to find my 2012 macbook pro refused to boot, it only displayed a dreaded flashing folder with a ? mark in the centre. Other times it would show other symbols with no advancement towards reading the hard drive to progress any further.
Firstly you must follow some simple instructions on holding a few keys down before pressing the boot button, by keeping these 2 keys down during the failed boot process you can enter a special recovery mode which enable you to establish whether you hard drive is broken or not. If you find this to be functional you will see the folder number as well as used and spare disk space data. Chances are if you can see this data then the cable is at fault. I bought this one as it comes with the bracket (which eliminates a fiddly step in the repair job), it is also exactly the correct length to follow the original parts layout with no messing around. I followed the online instructions which were clear and concise and had the laptop working in 30 mins.

Thank you for the part, it saved me a fortune by going DIY. (£30 including the toolkit compared to £50 to 'just have a look') !

Finally decided to look at what was slowing my laptop down - narrowed it down to hard drive or cable, and it was most likely the cable. This seemed like the best option as it was a straight swap replacement (no harvesting the old cable for parts)....found a couple of guides online and the swap was easy. Took my time and it was very easy 25 min replacement, with this part being exactly the same quality as the original.

It solved the problem, no more spinning beach ball and everything back to normal speed for £15, very happy.

Bought this for my old 2013 macbook pro 13-inch mid 2012 as I was getting the ol question mark folder problem. Wasn't fixable with any resettings and what not, and I didn't want to waste time with a genius appointment, so I figured either my harddrive or the cable went. Read up about it and realised there's a fussy little step about replacing a little component on the new cables you buy, thought i'd skip that and buy this one, not disappointed.

It was a cable issue, and then my harddrive died shortly after anyway, but new cable and hdd, working great.
Easy install, Cheers!

My mid-2012 Macbook Pro had been starting to get slow and was frequently displaying the dreaded spinning wheel of death. I recognised these symptoms from around 2 years ago, when this cable had been failing on the same computer. That time, I had no idea what was wrong after having tried a few things to fix it, so I got it fixed at an Apple authorised repair shop. This time I decided to do it myself to save that extra money and it was a simple easy 10 minute fix. Laptop started working as normal again immediately after replacing cable and booting up. Good item, good price, easy fix.
