I bought this intending to use it in RAID 1 mode to get extra protection against a disk failure. It should be obvious to Western Digital that the provision of RAID 1 would mean that it would be bought by users wanting to make loss of data due to failure of a single disk less likely. (And yes, I know RAID 1 doesn't guarantee safety and that a further backup is advisable. That's not the point - the point is that anyone buying it to use in RAID 1 mode would clearly be expecting significantly more safety than would be provided by a standard external hard drive from some other manufacture without RAID 1. However, due to action taken by Western Digital, this is not the case, and it would be impossible for Western Digital not to know this.

The drives are hardware encrypted. You cannot turn this encryption off. There is a password option, but even if you do not use this, the drives are still always encrypted. The electronics that do the encryption are built into the enclosure. The encryption/decryption key is built into a chip in the enclosure. The user has no access to this key.

Suppose the enclosure fails, and you cannot get it repaired easily. You may think that you can simply remove one of the drives and put it (for example) in a docking bay. However, the information on the drive is unreadable without the decryption key - the decryption key that is built into the enclosure: the drives are not readable outside the enclosure. It does not matter that the drives themselves may be fine: without the enclosure they are useless.

And that means that the "protection" provided by RAID 1 is useless: the redundancy of two drives is worthless, or at least has much less value is a failure of a single microchip can render the drives unreadable.

Neat, and easy to set up to use with an Apple Mac Mini.

HOWEVER the inclusion of hardware encryption, which cannot be switched out, means that the apparent safety net provided by the second drive is an illusion.

Fundamentally ill-conceived, the encryption renders this device for most users a liability.

One of the downsides of creating videos for websites (part of my day job) is the sheer amount of footage accumulated. For me, a project can call on between 100GB and 700GB of video assets. When the job's done, it would be nice to junk all of that theoretically unwanted footage, cut when creating just a 2-minute short. But you can't. It's precious. So precious, in fact, that you wouldn't trust it to one drive alone. Enter this drive. This is a nice, quiet external drive that can be configured asa x2 3TB RAID array, with one drive mirroring the other. Drop the files onto the drive and you have two backups. Brilliant. Performance is excellent, as I say it's quiet and it's pretty well built - though not as solid as LaCie's metal chassis. On the Mac, you have to use the WD software to change the RAID configuration and format the drive (for some reason Disk Utility wouldn't) but this is simple to do and takes minutes. An excellent drive.

Good price; does the job. Quiet & fast.
For Mac users: I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backup because of the serious bug with Time Machine, that Apple have been unable to fix in the last three OS releases. CCC is better than Time Machine in a number of ways (not least that it doesn't have that bug, so it doesn't stop backing up part of your system without telling you): for instance access to the backed up files being more straight-forward (so restoring a previous version is easier) - the CCC external drive simply shows as a device with all your files listed identically to your internal drive (plus earlier versions in an archive).
But best of all: it allows the Mac to boot from the external hard drive used for CCC, so if your internal hard drive fails, just boot from the external drive and you are up & running with all your applications, files etc. If the Mac is so broken that it won't boot from an external drive, just connect it to any other Mac and boot from it. A superb feature.
The problem is that some external hard drives do not allow booting from them, including early WD drives. Western Digital themselves will not confirm which drives support booting, but I can confirm that this drive definitely does. So if you are a Mac user, go for it.

Like others I got a few of 8TB version for the Helium "red" drives inside. I was not lucky enough (June 2016) to get Enterprise HGST/Hitachi drives but WD80EZZX which are 5,400rpm but still good.

Before opening them up I tested them through the enclosure (Windows' cipher writing 0 then 1 then random) which took 36 or so hours (as 3 passes) thus performance starts at about 200MB/s tailing to about 100MB/s which is not too bad.

TLER is disabled but can be enabled for RAID mode through SmartCtl utilities which for Windows means installing CygWin.

Note that they do run quite hot in the USB enclosure: I monitored them over the test and they reached about 54-55C and required a fan blowing onto the USB enclosure. So ventilation is pretty bad. Do bear this in mind if you intend to use them as USB as they are.

The price on AZ is good but WD's own shop sometimes has discounts/vouchers which can reduce the cost appreciably.
