- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI bought a pre-owned copy of Elly’s book as I’m terrible for buying recipe books then not using them much, and more importantly it seemed the perfect solution to fit her ethos of using up what’s already available. I use this book so much! The tomato, lentil & nigella seed soup is a firm favourite and the tomato & broccoli soup. So easy to adapt the recipes too. I’m making so many dishes from scratch, eating healthy has always been important to me and Elly makes it easy to do this.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI am really excited about this book, some lovely recipes that I can't wait to try, I stopped the 5:2 as I was struggling with what to eat a few years ago...this book has some fantastic 5:2 recipes with all the calories worked out and I am looking forward to re starting the 5:2 again. The feast day recipes also look delicious, there aren't any meat dishes in the book and though I enjoy meat the recipes look so delicious It isn't a problem for me and will help me eating healthier with more fruit and veg In my diet, however some of the feast recipes could easily be adapted with the addition of meat if so wished.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 July 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI have followed Elly on instagram for a few years, and always loved her colourful and interesting food pics. I was so excited to purchase the book, and started trying recipes straightaway. Most of them have been great, a few I needed to add extra spices or herbs to, to boost the flavour.
It's great to have batch cooking recipes, and healthier options I can eat as they are, or bulk up with wholemeal rice or bread etc, depending on the day. I think it's a great addition to your kitchen collection :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2016Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis is by no means a diet book. It has amazing recipes that can be made any time and gives great information on how to eat cleanly and healthy with superb ingredients, without going hungry. Each of the recipes I've tried so far have tasted great and have been easy to follow. I wouldn't be without this book now.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2016Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI'm very familiar with the 5:2 diet and I wanted a book to help me increase the vegetables and legumes in my diet. There are some great recipes in this book and from that respect the book is a great success and I think I will be dipping in and out of it for quite a while. The book is clearly presented and it is obvious that a lot of work, care and love has gone into it. One disappointing aspect is that quite a few recipes do not have photos. I'm not a great cook and I take great pride in producing a meal that looks like the picture in the recipe!! Also, it's the pictures that tend to attract me to a recipe in the first place. What also surprised me is the large number of photos of the author in the book, there are nearly 40. I would give this book 5 stars if there were more photos of the food and less of the author!! The photos of the author are all very attractive, but at the end of the day this is a cook book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseObviously the most important thing about any recipe book is the food, so first of all I should point out that there are lots of fab recipes in this book. Even the low-cal recipes are imaginative and tasty - I still don't actually think I would get through a 'fast' day without being hungry, but at least I would certainly enjoy what little I did eat. The 'feast' recipes are obviously more filling and in fact, most of them look still relatively healthy. Elly's enthusiasm really shines through and her introduction is down-to-earth and sensible.
What I don't like is that the fast/feast recipes are jumbled up all over the place and there is only a small indicator on the page to tell you which is which, so if you're looking for inspiration for a low-cal recipe, you have to flick through everything to find them. It would be so much easier to split the sections into fasts and feasts. Secondly, only the fast day recipes have a calorie count. I realise that the idea of the 5:2 approach Elly advocates is that you can eat 'whatever you like' on feast days and that's presumably why the feast day recipes aren't calorie-counted, but it would just make life a lot easier if there were calorie counts included on both. For a lot of people, eating "whatever they like" five days a week isn't going to work even with two fast days per week, and although they'll be able to eat more, they'll still need to keep a bit of an eye on things. There will also doubtless be people who don't actually follow the 5:2 plan but just want a book that includes some low-cal recipes to reduce their intake overall, so feast day calorie counts would just be a bonus and potentially broaden the book's appeal.
My final issue is that it's only when you've got the book and read the introduction - which runs over many pages and is very detailed - that it's made clear that this is a meat-free recipe book. I'm fine with meat-free eating and I like fish and vegetarian dishes, but I would have liked to have known it was pescetarian/vegetarian book before I decided whether to buy it as I do have quite a few vegetarian and seafood recipe books already.
Apart from that, though, this is nice book with some great recipes and some nice photography too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy daughter recommended this book as I Amon the 5/2 diet. Well, it’s FANTASTIC! Delicious recipes and the batch cooking section is brilliant as I can have meals ready to pull out of the freezer when I need to. The salads are so tasty - take photos of them so you don’t forget the vital ingredients while shopping.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2016Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseAwesome book! It's been my food bible since it was first published and it's made a big difference to my life already *off to cancel crappy weight watchers subscription* Love the way all of the recipes are super healthy, so tasty and easy to make too. Fast days taste like feasts in themselves. Elly makes the 5:2 easy and completely do-able. Fingers crossed there will one day be a book 2!

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseReally disappointed with this book. Nothing new or interesting here. Narrative structure is not aspirational it’s all rather dreary. Nothing screams flavor or ease.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book was overly 'matey' and surprisingly low on menu planning/prepping and scaling up suggestions. Muddling in fast and feast day recipes with no clear indication of which is which other than a calorie count in a corner for fast days is confusing at best and potentially misleading at worst. The book is far less informative than I had expected, and I am disappointed with the focus on lifestyle shots of the author and personal asides. It is hard not to feel that the book is more a tool to promote the author and her blog and business. It had sounded so good, but the relative lack of substance and structural clarity/rigour is unfortunate.
