This is the second G50 for me in just 3 months, the previous one also having the i3 4005U processor, and this happily means that both of my teenage daughters have almost identical laptops so that's one parental headache avoided.

Compared to my own laptop, the very obvious and pleasing benefit of this Lenovo G50 is its almost dead-silent operation. It's bordering on the unreal; I had to buy a laptop cooler for my own machine but no such problems with this new one here. It's also satisfyingly slim and light, making it as portable as you could hope for in a 15'6" laptop.

Of course it's often difficult to write about something like this and completely ignore the operating system, since the OS is such an influential factor. All I will say is that the Lenovo came with Windows 8.1 and we did an immediate upgrade to Windows 10. It took a long time but the feedback has been totally positive. Having had a brief try of W-10 I can see why people often describe it as a sort of combination of 7 and 8. Personally I have stuck with 7.

The plus points of the G50 are as follows :-

* Nice screen - large, bright and clear although not actually HD
* Thin physical size (less than 1 inch when lid down)
* Easy and convenient to hold
* Very quiet in use
* Excellent sound quality
* Decent webcam/camera
* Good SQ via microphone
* No problems with Bluetooth connction - always reliable
* Very good wi-fi connection from distance (opposite ends of house)
* Nice, intuitive keyboard
* Fantastic storage capacity of 1Tb
* Above average RAM of 6Gb - probably the best feature of all
* Decent battery - lasts three to four hours regularly
* Very useful DVD/CD player - not all laptops have one

The only negative is the trackpad which I'm simply not keen on, and whenever possible a wireless mouse is used. To be fair I feel the same about my own laptop which cost about £1500; I can't remember the last time I used any laptop with a trackpad/touchpad that I truly liked.

Inevitably the laptop comes with a few things you won't want to keep or use, such as McAfee anti-virus for example. I simply un-installed that and replaced it with Avast, which I've been using for years and feel comfortable with. The default browser is Internet Explorer which I'm not a fan of so I immediately installed Chrome. I also like Opera and Maxthon. I installed Microsoft Office via CD-ROM without any problems at all, as well as Libre Office via online download for compatibility with my daughter's school as they use that extensively.

I'm very happy with the Lenovo G50, I really love its silent operation and light weight, and it's great in the RAM and storage departments. One thing about it that keeps on making me smile is that both my daughters spent years loving and playing with their iPad, but now that's hardly ever used and they are using their laptops (i.e. this Lenovo G50) constantly - they now understand why a laptop is so much more flexible, useful and simply better than even the best tablets. They use the G50 for YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and probably a whole load of other entertainment as well as for their homework and general research. The current price makes it outstanding value for money and I would expect this to be a very popular model.

The photo on the Amazon website really doesn't do this product justice. It’s a much nicer looking machine than it appears in the picture. The lid has nice textured surface which should help to reduce fingerprints also the palm rest and area around keyboard has a black brushed steel effect which again should help to reduce fingerprints and gives it a more premium quality look. It’s actually fairly plain, no LED lighting effects except for two small LED’s on the front edge to indicate battery capacity and power, however it does look quite stylish.
There’s plenty of spacing between the keys which will help to avoid mistyping, although the keyboard is slightly springy but nothing to be concerned about and I've used a lot worse. On the left side there’s a VGA port, Ethernet port, HDMI port and 2 USB ports (1 USB2 & 1 USB3). On the right side is 1 USB2, card reader slot as well as the optical drive and headphone socket.
The display itself is a glossy LED/LCD screen so not good for use outdoors but is pretty much the norm on home laptops and it’s mostly only business laptops which come with matte/anti-glare screens. The resolution is 1366*768 which is standard for budget laptops.
On paper it’s a fair bit heavier than some other 15.6” laptops with similar specs but personally I find it fine and unless you’re specifically looking for something to carry around town with you this shouldn't be a concern and as most home users see laptops these days as replacement to desktops weight really isn't an issue for most. If you want something portable then you should really be looking at 14” or less.
Battery life is around 4 hours and whilst there are other laptops available with up to double this, so is the price, you’ll be hard pushed to find a sub £300 laptop with a battery capacity higher than 32Whrs. Battery life is also very subjective, how long the battery lasts will depend on the actual power being consumed (Watts per hour) which can vary greatly depending on what you’re doing and how bright you have the screen (word processing vs streaming a HD movie for example will result in a significant variation is battery life). As a long time computer repair technician I know that the majority of people never take their laptops out of the home and almost always have them plugged in while in use, so if you’re one of these, then again battery life is not that important.
On a final note, I've had the laptop installing all the available Windows 8.1 updates for the past couple of hours and am now proceeding with the Windows 10 upgrade and this laptop is incredibly quiet, it’s practically impossible to hear the fan or the hard drive without putting your ear right up against it.
It’s not the fastest laptop in the world but it’s a far cry from being slow and as it’s a budget laptop you can’t expect it to be super-fast and for most ‘basic’ computer users the speed will be perfectly acceptable. If you want something nippy and affordable you can’t go wrong with this laptop.
