Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

After buying Amazon Prime mainly for the next day delivery Service I decided to take advantage of all the TV and Music content Amazon Prime offers, Once I discovered how vast it is and how much media is available I wanted to include it in my normal TV viewing at home. As my main downstairs TV is not a SMART TV I couldn't just use the prime App so started looking at the Fire TV product and I am really pleased I did.
I chose the Fire TV Box rather than the smaller stick because of the interface speed as I would find any lag or buffering very frustrating, despite having a 100MB connection at home I decided the extra cost was worth it.
Delivery:
=======
Wow I ordered from Amazon mid morning and my Prime Membership allowed me to select SAME DAY DELIVERY, I then got an email that said delivery would be between 6-10pm, It arrived at about 6:05pm.
Un-boxing:
=======
The package was smaller than I expected and when opened everything was neatly and securely packaged and all the components were sealed in the 'peel off' plastic protection wrap, a bit like when you get a new phone. This was good because I felt it was definitely a new one and I hadn't received a reconditioned one.
Setting Up:
========
It's so simple even my 90 year old Grandma could do it.
Plug in the power lead, Insert Batteries in to the remote, Plug in the HDMI lead, Plug other end of HDMI lead to TV, Hold the Home button for 10 Seconds. Job Done!
It was already pre-registered to me so all I had to do was put in my Wi-Fi & Amazon passwords and up came the main menu with instant access to start watching.
Using the device & Remote:
====================
The remote is very easy to use, either navigate by pressing in a directional manner on the circle and selecting by pressing the center of the circle, Or hold down the microphone button, wait for a beep and then say what you want to watch. It then finds what you have said and allows you to select it. On this note, this is the best voice recognition I have seen yet, much better than those on phones etc.
There are lots of Apps you can install, like having a SMART TV, like Netflix and YouTube etc, once you install them they are pinned to your menu for quick access. The Netflix App is the fastest way to access Netflix I've found yet, Much faster than accessing through Virgin, or on my other SMART TV's, Phone or desktop PC Apps. It connects within seconds. Brilliant!
Accessing all the other content is just as quick and everything loads up really quickly with no buffering or loading screens.
If you want screen Mirroring from your other devices, phones and pads just hold the home button down on the Fire TV remote and select Mirroring and it waits for a mirror signal from the other device. On my Samsung S4 phone I just select the screen mirroring option under settings and it connects right away. I can then display any video or Web content on the TV. And the quality was OK too.
Summary:
=======
So in conclusion, Without prime it will turn your TV in to a SMART TV and give you access to a lot of Apps and media, But with an Amazon PRIME membership it unlocks a whole new world of TV, Films and Music for you to enjoy effortlessly.
If your still un-decided and on the fence, My advice is to just take a leap of faith and buy it, It really is that good!
Update
=====
After using it now for a while I am still really please with it. On the surface it shows you the premier shows & latest & popular content but if you go down to look in the category headings you will find a lot more.
You can install several different TV apps too so you can watch a lot of the normal free-view channels through the apps.
If you liked my review please give me a yes vote below, it would me much appreciated. Thanks.

After a few weeks of ownership, a strange thing has happened, we no longer watch any form of streaming service on a console, and we only watch the occasional TV show of Free view. We are now heavily relient on the Fire TV. There have been a few software updates, which have improved the sound and it could just be me, but the picture looks better. Now I should declare that I got new glasses last week, but I previously noticed that the console picture was originally better, but now no one in the family can tell the difference. To get the best out of this TV box, you need a Prime account. If you have one, then you have a music player, photo displayer and video centre in a tiny little box. We now watch an awful lot of Prime TV and films on this box, such as Mr Robot and The Man in the High Castle and so on. This TV box has become indispensable. The layout is all about Prime, so Netflix is lumped in with your apps, but Netflix operates well and without any issues. There are plenty of apps, but a little bit of Googling enables you to see that plenty of people have side-loaded (installed) Kodi and other Android apps to expand the usability. We have become very attached to using this TV box and we no longer see any limitations with it, we just see quick and simple access to our video, music and photo services. We could not recommend this device enough.
Original Review
==============
My Fire TV arrived today and it took very little time to setup. Had a slight issue with my purchased music not streaming, but two minute phone call with Amazon and it was sorted.
What I like about it: -
1. Size - very compact, so it is portable (take on holiday fit in jacket pocket portable).
2. The voice remote - picks up really well.
3. Speed - it is very slick in operation.
4. Functionality - Flixster for UltraViolet films was a bonus along with Netflix and Prime video all in one device is great.
5. Amazon Prime Photo's & Music are a real bonus and appear to work well, but I need some more time on the Music app to figure it out.
6. Games run well, but there is a limited amount of games compared to an Android tablet, but what there is more than enough.
7. The Netflix app in our Blu-Ray player looks "broken" and far too slow compared to how slick this TV box is.
8. I kept adding apps and this did not slow it down, as happens to my Android tablet.
9. Ethernet port - a must have for a video service, as wireless will let you down when it comes to HD films.
10. Additional storage option with a Micro SD card makes for a flexible device.
11. Catch-up TV from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 & 5.
Niggles (I have deleted niggles that have been rectified in software updates): -
1. Flixster films will play, but had some buffering & stopping issues, but less issues than on my Android tablet, that will just refuse to play them - looks like a Flixster issue to be honest.
2.
3. Built in web browser and the ability to play dlna content from my NAS drive would be desirable and whilst there is nowhere that they are claimed as features, I was half expecting that capability - update on this - I bought an app (AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)) for £3.84 on the Fire TV and that does the dlna very well indeed, in fact I am very impressed how well it does.
4.
5. Voice search - wife asked for the film "Paul", it searched for "porn"!!!! Slightly embarrassing family moment, but very funny!
6. Without a Prime membership, it is not so useful, as it is an Amazon device through & through.
7.
8.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Fire TV, it is powerful, robust and easy to operate. The picture quality is second only to the XBox One and it is silent in operation (PS4 has a good picture, but is too noisy for my liking, so the Fire TV beats the PS4 for TV). The good bit is, I can attach it to any TV in the house and watch all my TV/film subscriptions wherever I want.
I am delighted with this purchase and will use it a great deal.
Update about Amazon support
======================
Ever buy something technical and you are left high & dry with no support, or with support from people in a far away place reading prepared sheets that solve nothing and only serve to frustrate you? This is what I expected - how wrong I was!
With the Fire TV I needed support twice, the first being during set-up, where I had an issue with an app. This issue was resolved within about two minutes by Amazon. The second issue I had was regarding the Music app, where I could not get all of my library to appear. I selected the Help/Contact Us section on the Fire TV, the phone rang and I was advised what to do, it was sorted and all in less than a minute. The people on both occasions were from the UK, they were engaging and were interested in my user experience and knew their stuff - no reading from a sheet. This level of support has really emphasised to me how much I made the correct decision in choosing the Fire TV over the competition.
Like most other people who have purchased the new Fire TV 4K box I have experienced both good and bad. Fortunately for me the end results are good, but this is only down to getting lucky with the 4k tv I purchased.
The issue is that your 4K TV MUST have the following - at least 1 HDMI 2.0 port (not HDMI 1.4) and, crucially, HDCP 2.2. Dont know what that is? Neither did I. In a nutshell its copy protection for the 4K era and from what I have read is used to prevent people making illegal copies. The issue is that many 4K TV (early models in particular) dont have HDCP 2.2 and its required for you to receive 4K content from the Fire TV box.
Before you buy this product you must checkout out the specifications of your TV. If it reads that you have HDMI 2.0 ports and HDCP 2.2 then you're in luck. If it doesnt, then you might have problems.
It is also worth noting that, contrary to what other have said, 4K content DOES work on screen resolutions of 3840 x 2160. This is pretty much standard and would have been a massive error by amazon had it not.
Overall this gadget is fantastic and I have been very happy with the ease of use and picture quality. What prevents me from giving 4 stars is that amazon have made it far from clear how many 4k tvs wont actually get the 4K benefits from this device and this is only going to disappoint a lot of people. Also, the 4K content is minimal (most UHD movies cost about £20!) however I have noticed free content for Prime users starting to pop up which is a good sign.
If you have the right TV then you wont be disappointed, just please make sure you do!
