Product description

Product Description

Star Fox turns the Wii U GamePad into the view from the cockpit of Fox McCloud's Arwing fighter. While the TV shows the perspective from behind the Arwing, players can also use the gyro sensors of the GamePad to intuitively and independently target enemies. Players can instantly switch between the Arwing and Landmaster tank with the press of a button, and the game also introduces a new helicopter-type vehicle. The game is scheduled for 2015.

Manufacturer's Description

Starfox

From the manufacturer

Star Fox Zero

An evil empire has risen and the Lylat system is in danger. As legendary space pilot Fox McCloud, blast through an onslaught of enemy forces to bring peace to the galaxy. In this white-knuckle space shooter, it’ll take more than luck to master the Arwing jet, the Gyrowing flight drone, and the Landmaster tank! You have what it takes. Now prove it.

Multiple paths branch out to give players plenty of places to explore, and each route gives them a completely different experience and unique challenges.

Players will notice their skills get better and better over time, as they become top-notch pilots. In two-player mode, one player can fly the Arwing while the other player aims and shoots.

Pilot the new and improved Arwing with its new Walker transformation and take control of a new Drone type plane, the Gyrowing. The Landmaster Tank returns, equipped with a new, limited flight form.

James McCloud, Pigma Dengar, and Peppy Hare of the Star Fox team were sent on a mission to the planet Venom, where a twisted scientist, Andross, had been exiled years earlier. Upon their arrival, Pigma betrayed the team. Peppy barely escaped but James was never heard from again.

The evil, power-hungry Andross is back, marching his fearsome forces across the galaxy. General Pepper now turns to a new Star Fox team, lead by James McCloud's son, Fox McCloud, to save the Lylat System and defeat Andross once and for all.

Immerse yourself in the action with a unique control scheme that uses both the TV screen and Wii U GamePad. Revisit stages filled with collectible Medals and explore branching paths to discover new challenges. And join Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy as they fight to protect the Lylat System from Andross’s invasion!

I have been sent the Australian version, not UK
Please note the copy I have received is an Australian version, not a UK version. While it should play ok on a UK Wii U, I would have appreciated someone had mentioned this in the game description.

Star Fox Zero takes the heart of the classic SNES game and builds further on the foundations set by Lylat Wars (Starfox 64). The control scheme is unusual but inspired and once you learn how to use the two different views available to you the game has surprising depth.

Every time I play it I put it down excited. That's a feeling I've not felt from many games since Quake 2 and one I feel can't be generated by a poor game.

It's a simple game to play but with many different elements. There's not only the rear view scrolling shooter side that has been the heart of the games since the original but also simplified space sim elements built on the 'all range mode' battles introduced on the N64. On top of that there's 3rd person action/platform elements to punctuate.

The game has a lot of replayability and a fantastic approach to difficulty. Novice players can focus on reaching the end of a level and then practising individual levels to get a better score in the main game mode but arcade mode might appeal to more experienced players.

Arcade mode is unlocked by defeating Andross and offers an experience similar to the classic games but with the added challenge of not being allowed to build a store of extra lives and a record for both most hits and fastest time for a full play through.

What's important though is that the game's just bags of fun. It's a shooter with a throbbing arcade heart.

I loved Star Fox back on the original SNES and through the various iterations released thereafter. Star Fox Zero does not disappoint this old, nostalgic gamer. Granted the controls took some getting used to but it's not nearly as bad as some of the poor reviews are saying on Amazon, certainly isn't unplayable. Little bit of patience and practice in the training grounds (which is why they're there in the first place) and you'll be destroying Andross's minions in no time.

The graphics are colourful and very pretty, don't think I've ever seen Corneria in such vibrancy, big thumbs up from me and frankly Nintendo remembering it's roots of good, fun, and original gameplay, stories and characters.

Seriously, if people think this is hard then they've clearly never played SNES Star Fox before.

Bought this for my daughters (age 10 and 12), they both are happy with this game, the graphic is good and keep them occupied for hours. The only down side of this game is the "controls" like others have said it is really hard to control sometimes and you could get annoyed and frustrated with it. But overall this is a good and really fun game, once you get the hang of it ( a lot of practise) then you will be fine.

The controls for this game are very confusing, they are a force fusion of normal and motion controls (I have it set to the mode with the least motion controls, but that doesn't mean they're completely gone) that means that you can shot and control the ship via the sticks, but whenever you want to aim, you've got to tilt the Wii-U GamePad, not good.

Overall, the game itself is a decent entry to the Star Fox series, but it is extremely short, I reached the final boss within about 2 1/2 hours on my first run. The game isn't very difficult on its Normal Mode, however it has the option to tone down the difficulty and has the infamous Invincible Mode, just in case you want to breeze through it.

As it stands, I would say this; pick the game up when it's a little cheaper.

Do not listen to lazy reviewers.

The gameplay is solid, levels are well designed, the story, characters and worlds are all very Starfox with brilliant boss battles designed by Platinum Games. The controls allow you to move via any vector while simultaneously aiming and shooting in any other direction. Initially the controls are demanding and require your brain to focus on two tasks, however this can lead to incredibly rewarding and complex gameplay.

There's also co operative if you and a friend would like to play the role of a pilot and gunner.

I'm Confused as to why this game gets a bad rep and bad reviews from critics, it's an awesome wee game. The controls are nowhere near as bad as they get made out to be, infact I really like the setup. Missions are action packed and have a good variety to keep the series fresh. Great graphics too. If I had to make 1 wee complaint it might be that the game is a bit easy, but it is great fun.

The game is easy to pick and play, although you will find the gamepad makes it a bit tricky to control mainly due to having to look at the TV and the gamepad at the same time - and this game makes extensive use of the gamepad. If you want to play this game without it getting annoying (which it can), then play with another partner - one to navigate and the other to shoot or vice versa - you decide.

Fans of Lylat Wars on the N64 will love Starfox Zero as it really does capture the spirit of the original in many ways and has the same replayability factor. It's great to see the original voice actors returning for this one and many of the classic quotes such as "Do a barrel roll!" etc! The controls are absolutely fine and I got to grips with them immediately. The only thing stopping me giving this 5 stars is the variety of different vehicles that you have to use, personally I would prefer to just fly the arwing with maybe one landmaster level, I understand that they were trying to keep things fresh with the new vehicles but none of them are quite as fun to pilot as the arwing. It's not a major criticism though and I am enjoying the game very much. Starfox Zero is unlikely to win the series any new fans but anyone who enjoyed Starfox on the SNES or Lylat Wars on the N64 should definitely buy this!
