Product description
Product Description
Synopsis: Legendary director Lindsay Anderson expanded on the social outrage and intense character focus of his debut This Sporting Life with this combustible tale of teenage insurrection. Winner of the 1969 Palme d Or at Cannes, If.... was a popular triumph and instantly recognised as a classic.
A caustic portrait of a traditional boys boarding school, where social hierarchy reigns supreme and power remains in the hands of distanced and ineffectual teachers and callously vicious prefects. But three junior pupils, led by Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell in the role that would catapult him to becoming one of Britain's most iconic actors), decide on a shocking course of action to redress the balance of privilege once and for all.
Packed to bursting with its director's customary passion and experimentation, If.... remains one of cinema's quintessential tales of rebellion, a radical snapshot of late 60s change, and one of the towering achievements of British film in any era. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this masterpiece in a new Blu-ray edition.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2014This is an excellent transfer to the Blu-ray format. The film itself stands the test of time and on a personal note, I enjoyed seeing some of my old school chums in the opening scenes of the new term at the school. While McDowell steals the film, the wonderful, understated performance of Arthur Lowe is a real joy to watch. At times burningly realistic in its portrayal of the public school system of the 1960s, the surreal moments, such as the chaplain being brought out from a drawer, never seem to jar. It's a cinematic tour de force, made on a shoestring budget, and one that will stand scrutiny for centuries to come. The appearance of 'If...' at my school's local cinema did much to hasten the end of prefectorial beatings - a legacy that generations of Whitgiftians owe to Mr Anderson!
Grab this Blu-ray version - it's a thought-provoking and joyous movie.

Dick BealeReviewed in Australia on 29 June 20194.0 out of 5 stars Dated but worthwhile
I heard about this film when I was still at school and had long since given up on ever seeing it. However some 50 years later I found this copy and I'm pleased to have finally been able to watch it. Set in a very English school of the period, and not unlike a lot of Australian private schools of the late 60s and early 70s, there are a group of very repressed rebels without a cause, who find it very difficult to be a part of establishment. Many films have been made since If, following the same theme, but, very few that I've seen have the same sort of ending. In fact, in a post Columbine school shooting era, I doubt that anyone would even want to make a new movie like If. The special effects in the final scenes are very poor by modern standards, but effective nevertheless, and the acting can be rather wooden too, which detracts somewhat, but overall, worth chasing-up for a collection.
So more of a movie for us old nostalgia ridden sixty-somethings but a message within that's just as valid today as it was then.

BastienReviewed in France on 1 June 20085.0 out of 5 stars Premier chef d'oeuvre de Lindsay Anderson.
Bravo.
