This review is for the 5TB version. For the price, this is a good value external drive. It runs cool and quiet, and is not constantly spinning down and going to sleep.

Connected to my iMac by USB3.0, I get speeds up to 105MB/s write & 100MB/s read (measured by Blackmagic Disk Speed Test). Not blazingly fast, but adequate for my needs, which is mainly backups.

I also scanned the drive for bad blocks with Drive Genius (none found) and ran the DriveDx utility, which gives health diagnostics on connected drives. No causes for concern were reported, though interestingly DriveDx identified the drive inside this unit as a 5980rpm model (ST5000DM000), not 7200rpm as stated in the Amazon description.

The internal drive is in fact the discontinued Seagate Barracuda listed on Amazon here:

NB: Mac users should begin by formatting this drive. Use Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities) to format with a GUID partition map if you intend to use the drive for Time Machine or as a boot drive.

Previously the 4TB and 5TB versions of this drive had been purchased to serve different storage needs; the repeated failure of a multi-drive array required a solution and this was the least expensive option of several, including replacing all the drive units within the array. An 8TB HDD was another possibility, allowing scope for further data, but proved disproportionally expensive adding about half-as-much again to the price of this.

The older drives have proven to be reliable and trouble-free in the months or years since they were first used, hence the choice of this. It includes a 1m data cable and a 1.5m power lead which was just about long enough.

As with the lower capacity versions, it includes the same basic backup software although in a slightly later version which was not then used and will remain unused now. Although this type of backup software was a regular component of my set-up, an alternative hardware approach is now employed, is simpler to use, faster to perform and restoration is far simpler and more reliable.

ADDENDUM - After about two weeks of use, upon powering the drive, it was found that its partition and format were completely corrupted and the 5+TB of contents lost, with only 2TB potentially accessible. A Partition Manager was used to remove the remains of the partition data and re-formatted. Fortunately, the drive had been backed-up the previous afternoon and a full reserve copy held. Something similar had previously occured and with another and lower capacity Seagate HDD. There may be a possible issue with the model, possibly the unit.

Within 48 hours of the first incident, the loss of partition data and all else occurred again, after which the unit was returned.

I took a long time checking out hard drives and found that most came with mixed reviews. Some were noisey, some got hot, some failed - but the same drives also got rave reviews by others that meant reveiws alone are not really definitive. So I based my decision on previous experience, and as I am still using a Seagate drive that is 4 years old with no problems, I went for a 3TB Backup Plus. The Plus is a good weight and appears well made, although the corners are needlessly sharp and who actually wants a piano black casing that shows up every finger print or scratch! Still, mine like most will sit happily under the desk our of harms way and out of sight, so these are not major critisms. The drive is very easy to set up and comes with Seagate Dashboard already loaded. Dashboard gives reasonable options for backing up from continuous to scheduled, but the drive can also be used with either third party software or simply for aditional storage. I went for the 3TB as this should be enough storage for me well into the future and I have read that larger discs can present some problems with failure and compatability. I have had no problems with speed of file transfer - easily as fast as it needs to be.

All in all a good product that I would happily recommend to others. I'll report back if there are any problems in the fiuture.

I've got two of these hard-drives as I use them professionally in my video production company to back up the enormous amounts of data that we have (and continue to generate!). They have been reliable and easy to use.

I've sometimes stacked them on top of each other (this is probably not recommended as they generate heat and could be a potential safety risk). However they have good ventilation and seem to manage heat well.

I'm used to Thunderbolt speeds so the USB 3 seems a bit on the slow side, but the truth is that it's great - for USB. To have an 8TB Thunderbolt drive would be ridiculously expensive - this drive is the perfect trade-off between capacity and value for money. Not a bad price for what you're getting.

I had no problems formatting it for Mac use.

I was in need for a backup drive where I could fit in my personal files and my computer backups as well. So, I decided to get something large (as in a 3.5" desktop drive) and with a good capacity, so for me this was the drive to get.
As an introductory note, despite of the photos showing the drive held upwards, it is supposed to work lying down on a table. Be sure to mount it correctly.
When you plug it in, it prompts you to install the Seagate Dashboard. That is an utility that allows you to backup files from your computer and your mobile devices, too. However, I'm more keen of other backup solutions, so I passed it. After that, I was able to format it (therefore you can use it with any OS of your liking) and create two partitions with different filesystems.
The drive is one of the fastest in its class: it easily gets to 120MB/s read and 130 MB/s write, so large backups are a breeze as long as you use USB 3.0.
While working, it does the typical fan whirring noise, which is not loud at all but still definitely audible if holding it next to you. For so, you might want to keep it under your desk or in some place that doesn't disturb. When put in standby, it makes almost no noise, and you won't even notice it's there.

To sum up, if you want to purchase a drive for unextensive, routinely backups, and don't want - or need - to spend a small fortune on a NAS or RAID setup, the Seagate Backup Plus might be a good option to consider. It is sleek, fast, and pretty much gets the job done.
